How to stain bones with tea?

Asked by latinagirl56 (112points) May 19th, 2011

Does anyone know how to stain animal bones with tea? I’ve been searching everywhere and I can’t find anything. I’m going to start a new hobby which is putting animal bones together to create a skeleton also known as articulation. Anyways when I complete the skeleton I don’t want the bones to be super white so I want to learn how to stain the bones so they can look more natural. Also this question is more about actually putting the skeleton together but is it easier to wire the tail together or use glue?

Just leave them sitting in at for a while, drinking tea/coffee stains teeth, so this should work, not sure of the time frame though. You might consider putting a protective epoxy over the bones, and that might dull the white as well. This page might help you out as well.

i would use wire to connect the bones and use a drill for the holes to put the wire in. you could use glue but you can’t adjust the bones afterward if they are glued. aslo you would need a realy strong and fast drying glue like epoxy or something. personally i would go with the wire

You might call your dentist to ask them if they have thoughts on how stuff stains teeth, how long, etc. It’s a long shot, but the more you learn about your subject, the more you will be able to do.

Try making a peat moss tea. Real thick, like cake batter. Different bones may take different time to color.

One thing to consider is whether you want them all identical in color. If so, you will want to watch how strong you make your tea and how long they sit in it.

Why don’t you want them white?

@jeruba well i will probably keep my first skeleton white
but for the others i want to try something new
