What could be wrong with my laptop speakers?

Asked by marialisa (464points) May 24th, 2011

My speakers are at 100% and nothing seems to be on mute. No sound or noise at all. I have no idea what’s wrong. I’m stumped!

Do you have the correct drivers? I have had a few installs go silent when the AC97 codec either disappeared or wasn’t installed in the first place.

How about the mixer? Poke around and find all of the volume controls ;)

There is always the possibility that it thinks there is something in the headphone jack, which will cause the speakers to disconnect.

If those don’t work, I will think of a few other things, but try those first.

@jerv I think it thinks something is in there cause last night I used the head phones and today, they do not work.
Are you the only computer person that answers my questions?

Right click on the speaker icon and go to playback devices, make sure the speakers are selected as the default playback device.

Not the only one, but the one most likely to help in the majority of cases.

I messed around with all the stuff you guys told me to and also I updated stuff. I went on some hardware device driver thing and when my computer rebooted, the sound worked. Thank you all!
