How can I help my kittens get over their colds?

Asked by taytaysafreak (244points) May 25th, 2011

I just adopted 2 kittens, both 2 months old. At first, my little girl (Juno) was extremely healthy and my smaller boy (Boba Fett) was sneezing and icky looking. Eventually, they both got sick and the vet gave me antibiotics. I’m not sure what they have, but they both sneeze, have runny noses (which are now VERY stuffy) and Juno has become extremely lethargic. They’re both eating and drinking but Juno can no longer breathe out of her nose. Boba is doing much better, Juno is getting worse. What can I do to make it easier for them both? I don’t have a humidifier or anything like that…is there anything I can do from home? I’m only on day 3 out of 10 of giving them their meds.

Sounds like an upper respiratory.

When you’re in the shower, take them into the bathroom with you. The steam will help clear up their little noses a bit. Can’t you pick up a cheap humidifier?

Make sure they finish all their medication, and, maybe try giving then some warm chicken broth.
Use a warm/hot cloth to keep their eyes from crusting up. Keep them warm, and allow them lots of rest. If they do not show improvement after a week of medication, take them back to the vet.

Thta sounds like another trip to the vet is in order, it sounds more serious than home careā€¦. kittens are very delicate when it comes to upper respitory illness and you have to be careful with them. I would head back to the vet today with them both so the vet can reacess them again.

If they are already on antibiotics for a uri, you could give them a few drops of children’s cold medicine. I have a British shorthair cat that seems to be succeptable to colds, and my vet told me to try this. He freaks out and foams at the mouth and sneezes a bunch of goop out of his nose, and then just about when I thought I have killed him, he stops and is just fine.

Keep doing what you are doing. As long as the kittens continue to eat, drink, pee and poop all will be well in time.
