We had another whole thread going on oxymorons… doesn’t this Q belong there?

Watch the movie Heavy Metal. It’s got lots of great heavy metal music by various bands!

I would give the nod to Metallica if they had stopped at . . .And Justice For All.

Instead I’m throwing my vote to Queens Of The Stone Age, self proclaimed metal heavy, soft at the core.

Agree 100% with Jon concerning Metallica.

My favorite metal record beyond a shadow of a doubt is Slayer’s Reign in Blood, but unfortunately I think every other release of theirs is complete shit.

jonsblond's avatar

I agree with my husband concerning Metallica.

Kill Em’ All is my fave

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

I’ve got to agree with everyone else regarding Metallica.

I wouldn’t technically consider them “metal” anymore, but as far as any other metal bands I’ve heard- Metallica is my favorite.

Rarebear's avatar

Much prefer Dream Theater, Rush, Queensryche, and Tool for prog metal.
For classic metal, Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, Dio, Rainbow, Judas Priest
For alternative metal, Ambeon, Gretchen, Evanescence

Metallica is overrated.

AC/DC without a doubt then Iron Maiden… Saxon & Motorhead are way up there too……. ;-)

FutureMemory's avatar

Iron Maiden Live After Death is a classic album. I still bust out the concert footage once in awhile :)

Michael_Huntington's avatar

No Sabbath?!
Fluther, I am disappoint.

Blondesjon's avatar

@Michael_Huntington . . . those fairies wear boots . . .

filmfann's avatar

I don’t know why people consider Pink Floyd to be a metal band, but they do.
PF is the best damn band this side of the Beatles. Any kind of band.

KateTheGreat's avatar

Black Sabbath, Anthrax, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest are all my top favorites.

Rush and Twisted Sister.

I wanted to check out some of your suggestions, and I just listened to Judas’ Painkiller for the first time….Wow….....that was great.

Blondesjon's avatar

@Blackberry . . . screaming for vengeance also kicks some major ass.

filmfann's avatar

Because I made a promise to Yarnlady, I cannot tell you what I think of Rush.

Michael_Huntington's avatar

@Blackberry Check out Sad Wings of Destiny. Imho, best JP album ever.
Message me if you want to get into extreme metal. That’s my expertise.

Black Sabbath from 1970 to 1971 (first 3 albums).

Would anyone allow me to mention Ministry? I was a huge Ministry fan, and many metal fans who weren’t digging the whole “industrial” thing seemed to appreciate Ministry.

Michael_Huntington's avatar

@tom_g Ministry is pretty cool. Also, I thought you were going to say Celtic Frost, because of Tom G Warrior, lol.

Blondesjon's avatar

Ministry’s So What is on my top 10 songs of all time list.

jonsblond's avatar

@tom_g I saw Ministry in 1991. One of the best shows I’ve ever seen. I gave Al shrooms that night. Don’t tell anyone!

tom_g's avatar

(note: The crossover appeal of Ministry appealed to me because of their industrial stuff.)

Land of Rape and Honey, and Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste are amazing.

@jonsblond – I’m extremely jealous. The closest I got to seeing them was the onstage circus that was Revolting Cocks 1990/1991 for the Beers, Steers… tour. Al and

I denno if they’re the best of all, but I love Metallica, at least, until they just became hard rock rather than actual metal. I like the recent stuff yeah, but not as much as Harvester of Sorrow. I also love Cradle of Filth, even if they’re totally the mainstream metal band of all underground metal bands haha.

Mortician It might be so bad it’s good, but you know that a metal band that opens all its songs with classic horror movie quoting totally rocks. well for me…

FutureMemory's avatar

@Symbeline ”...well, at least you made nice clean cuts.”

Megadeth fucking Rules!

Rarebear's avatar

@Michael_Huntington I do like Toni Iommi a lot. I just forgot Sabbath in my initial list.

Jude's avatar

My girl likes Pantera.

Only138's avatar

Ozzy rules!

Berserker's avatar

@Only138 You got that shit right. :)

jerv's avatar

Hmm…

Slayer is decent, but I have to go with Black Sabbath if for no reason other than staying power, and giving Ozzy a start.

Metallica jumped the shark long ago, and should’ve been thrown in the shark tank after The Black Album hit the shelves so we could remember them before they started to suck.

woodcutter's avatar

Old Judas Priest ala “Sad Wings of Destiny”, “Killing Machine”, and “Stained Class”...heavy
Old Scorpions ala; “Fly to the Rainbow”, “Virgin Killer”(the first album cover),“In Trance”, “Tokyo Tapes”... kickass

woodcutter's avatar

UFO, album: “Force it”

jonsblond's avatar

@tom_g Remember the early days of Ministry? Every Day Is Halloween

teehee

DeanV's avatar

Not exactly metal, but I really like The Melvins.

I think they belong on any sort of top bands list.

ucme's avatar

The Carpenters….oh fuck, they were inspired by wood weren’t they?
Spinal Tap!

@Pele Have you ever seen GWAR in concert?

Pele's avatar

I could say Iron Maiden. Right now I’m accually in the middle of a painting of Ed Hunter for my brother. I always had this painting up in my house that he did of Ed Hunter circa 1986 in high high school which screams 80’s. I love it to death. He is 13 years older than me. I just want to return the favor. He is now an amazing artist, but I thought this Ed hunter piece would be a nice surprise. Like a thank you for his 80’s awesomeness in my hallway. He never gave me the piece, just left it with my parents. I just took it. I think this maybe a nice present :)

KateTheGreat's avatar

@Pele I fucking love GWAR concerts. That shit is so much fun.

Russell_D_SpacePoet's avatar

Hard to pick one. Iron Maiden though was one of the forerunners and one of my favorites.. Made it big with almost no airplay.

Russell_D_SpacePoet's avatar

Megadeath also. I think they are/were under rated. Metallica. Master of Puppets was one of their best.
