Coupon show- how to start what these people do?

Asked by kb12345 (435points) June 1st, 2011 from iPhone

I’m not looking to spend 5 dollars on a 600$ purchase, but barely having enough money left in the budget for food. It would be nice to save as much as possible…. Any websites that provide great coupons and any other useful sites/tips?

My big suggestion is grab the Sunday papers and if there are coupons in it that you use the products and they will end up saving you the price of the paper then I suggest buying another. I also receive weekly coupons in the mail like the ones you get in the paper so check in your junk mail their maybe some coupons there. I would also suggest looking in the flyers for the grocery stores and sometimes there are coupons you can use where you can double or triple manufactuers coupons which can save you even more at the register

I think you have to be careful with coupons. Oftentimes, I’ve noticed that coupons are for non-necessary things. I have never seen a coupon for, say, fresh vegetables or milk.

A few ways you can save money is to freeze a lot of stuff. If, say, there’s a sale on bread or cheese, buy a whole bunch and stick it in your freezer. Also, keep in mind that name-brand stuff is not automatically better than grocery-store brand or “cheap” brand stuff. If you do have a preference for a specific brand, I have found that many brands will give you coupons on their websites and some have rewards programs that will give you points for buying their products. You also may be able to buy some brands at other stores for cheaper. I buy a lot of food at Rite-Aid because it’s cheaper, they have more sales, and my Rite-Aid card gives me lots of savings.

@KatawaGrey Actually I save on average of $20.00 per $100.00 at BJ’s using a combination of BJ’s coupons and manufactuers coupons and the great thing about the BJ’s coupons they have them for banana’s free if you buy something else, or there is money off salad mix, or other things like that. I love BJ’s for offering such coupons. Who wouldn’t want to save and extra $5.00 on the cat food you usually buy and its already cheaper at BJ’s than in the pet store or grocery store and then add the BJ’s coupon its great!

I also only clip the coupons for the items I always buy and I don’t go after the junk for the sake of saving. Its something I highly suggest doing because then your not gathering things for the sake of a coupon.

@creative1: That’s good. BJ’s and Costco’s are excellent places that tend to have what people need at great prices anyway. A lot of people, however, buy the kinds of stuff that they don’t actually need in order to save and thus, can buy lower quality food or food they wouldn’t have otherwise bought. I once saw a clip from the show “Extreme Couponers” and the woman featured had a cart full of ice cream, frozen pizzas and sugary cereals. I don’t eat any of these things on a regular basis so I suspect her brand of couponing would not fit me well.

@creative1 when talking about doubling or tripling I see that apt on this new show, do all stores do this?

creative1's avatar

@kb12345 usually grocery stores do but these days they are typically done by coupons in that weeks ad but then they don’t always have them. There are 2 different ways to do this, one that @KatawaGrey speaks of that buys for the sake of the savings and the other to get the items you would need normally at the store. Watch this link on Hulu which aired on ABC Nightline. This might help you in your quest.

@kb12345, it is amazing and inspirational to see what these people do with coupons. I have started clipping and organizing coupons, going through the circulars to see what is on sale and making a good shopping list. Did you know you can load coupons to your store card at many grocery store chains? Here’s an example:

Oh, and not all stores double or triple coupons. Depends on the store location. You can check it out on the store site on the Internet.

Kroger actually does have coupons for fresh vegetables, meats, and fresh baked goods at times if you sign up for their card.

I buy the Entertainment book for my area and there is a $5 off coupon for each month of the year for Kroger, which is really good.

Coupons are usually best used a few weeks after you first get them. When they are first published usually the stores have the items at the regular price, but in a couple of weeks they might go back on sale plus your coupon.
