Are there any flutherites who read mangas and know of an e-book that would be able to download mangas?

Asked by Pandora (32192points) June 6th, 2011

My sons birthday is coming up and I know he loves to read mangas. He is always traveling and so I thought he would enjoy an e-book so he can read when trapped on long flights.
My only problem is he loves to read Mangas as well. I know the nook comes in color for magazines but I do not know if that covers Mangas as well. I would like to hear from someone who already uses and e-book to read their mangas.
If you can list some sites that have a large list of Mangas that can be downloaded for e-book, that would be great as well.
Not having any luck researching it.
Thanks.

Try googling “Download PDF of(book name here)”, that’s worked before for me with comic books and a couple illustrated stories, should work with mangas. Most E-raders can read PDF’s, the Kindle seems liek a really good one to get.

Mangas are going to be in PDF form, because they’re basically pictures. He’s going to need an ereader that has color and reads PDFs, like the iPad.

@MyNewtBoobs No way, iPad is a major ripoff, and too expensive for this. There are several E-readers that support color. Also, forget the kindle, this barnes and noble e-reader supports color, and starts at $250!

I know the color Nook is suppose to be able to download magazines and newspapers, so I thought it would be a good one but someone wrote one of the cons is that it won’t work overseas.

Does it need to?

Yeah, he will be overseas for the next 3 years.

1. There is no such thing as “Mangas”. Manga is a word that is simultaneously singular and plural.

2. You can read manga on a Nook by Barnes and Noble. I have one and I read my Vagabond manga by Inoue Takehiko on it and it looks perfect. I also read Hagane no Renkinjutsushi by Hiromu Arakawa on it.

3. What you need to do is this:

Find a source of online manga/ e-manga and download the manga.

Download and install Calibre E-Book management client.

Most online manga is saved in the .cbr or .cbz format but Nook (and most other e-readers) use the ePub format so you will need Calibre to CONVERT the manga from .cbz to ePub.

Once you have done this with Calibre, just plug in your Nook to your computer and Calibre will recognise it.

Click Send to Device /Send to Nook and the manga will be sent to your Nook under the My Documents section of your Nook Library.

And that’s all.

Also in the interest of full disclosure, I have a Nook 3g black and white.

Most manga is in black and white so it doesn’t matter. Only the cover of the manga is in colour so it’s not a big deal. Also, the LCD screen of the Nook colour causes eye fatigue so you can’t read for as long a time as you can with the Nook black and white. But if you want a Nook colour, it will work just as well.

You cannot BUY new ebooks or download them from your Nook when you are overseas but you CAN load them into your Nook from your computer before you go.

You can get electronic versions of most manga from torrent sites (unfortunately the publishers haven’t started making e versions so fans have to upload them themselves – I would buy them otherwise).

Use a good torrent client like Bittorrent and always scan for viruses before you open.

Also, if the original publisher has started putting out an electronic version of the manga for sale, buy from the publisher instead to support the artist. Making manga is very hard work so always buy from legitimate channels whenever it is possible. If it is not possible, then download from a torrent site.
