What does a person feel like the day after being hit hard in the stomach?

Asked by MissAusten (16157points) June 7th, 2011

Yesterday evening, my son crashed on his bike and whacked himself hard in the belly with the handlebars on the way down. He knocked the air right out of himself, poor guy, but after a few gasps (and a bit of puking) said he felt better. I checked with the doctor about signs to watch for because I keep thinking of internal bleeding. Nothing of concern, and he slept well last night and is in good spirits.

However, he says he has a stomach ache. It hurts when he stands up straight or laughs. He’s not crying, and other than complaining and saying he can’t go to school, he’s acting normal. He’s 7, by the way. To make me even more conflicted, he was complaining of a stomach ache yesterday afternoon and during dinner, before he got hurt.

For those of you who have taken a good blow to the stomach, is soreness the next day typical? How long did it last?

Sounds like a broken rib. I have had a few from drunken wrestling. They can’t really do anything for it. It will hurt for a few weeks. Advil helped me with the pain. But I’m not sure about giving advil to a 7 year old.

It caused enough discomfort where I just drank screwdrivers every-night until I passed out since sober sleeping wasn’t working.

Well, it’s the soft part of his belly that hurts but thanks for giving me another kind of injury to worry about. ;)

Go see a doctor .. anyway it’s normal to feel pain and pain differs from person to person.

Sounds like a bruise to me.

He’s going to feel the accident for a few days. Ask your pediatrician about giving him children’s Tylenol or Motrin for the discomfort, and apply ice packs. He will have a doozie of a bruise.

I wouldn’t screw around with it. Soft tissue injuries like that can be nasty. He could have damaged his spleen or other organ. Go see the docs.

@Adirondackwannabe and @Hibernate The doctor gave me a list of things to watch for and instructions to call back later today with an update. If she felt he needed to be checked out, I certainly would have taken him to the hospital.

I decided to keep him home from school to keep an eye on him and give him a day to feel better. He probably could have made it, since it seems like moving around actually helps. He took a shower, got himself dressed, and ate a Cuban sandwich for breakfast. He’s just really sore, but not having ever taken a hit to the tummy I don’t know how sore someone is after something like that or how long it will last.

He is bruised. Just continue to watch for the signs of internal bleeding. Update the doc (mention the pain). He will probably be fine.

He also probably tensed up a lot both during the accident and right after. Combine that with puking and just being hit really hard in the stomach and it’s not surprising that he still hurts. If it was a worse injury, he would probably feel it more and/or it would probably manifest in other ways. I’d be worried if he stops being able to eat or if he has trouble moving around once this pain had gone away.

Sounds like deep bruising, That along with movement and sloshing around of internal organs it is not surprising he will have some discomfort. it takes a while for innards to squish back into place. Watch for internal bleeding and changes in bowel habits. While it’s always wise to consult a physician, I have been beaten a few times and suffered similar injuries.

Numb tight muscles, not sure if you’re breathing right or not and sometimes a sore throat and have to pee a lot.

Thanks for the responses. So far, he has none of the symptoms the doctor told me to look out for. He ate everything he could get his hands on yesterday and spent a while after dinner throwing and kicking the football around. I’ve been giving him ibuprofen as needed and told him he can’t ride his bike for a while. This isn’t the first time he’s had some dramatic bike crash.

It’s probably just bruising, have him take it easy for awhile but do make sure he’s eating and having bowel movents regularly to make sure he didn’t damage any internal organs.
