Accidently melted some rubber...are the fumes dangerous?

Asked by chocolatechip (3009points) June 8th, 2011

I accidentally melted a bit of rubber gloves (used for cleaning, dishwashing) when I was cooking. The stovetop fan isn’t working, but I’ve opened all the windows and doors. Are the fumes dangeorus?

Yes, but you’ve taken the right action. Keep them open for a bit. You’ll be fine

How safe is it for me to remain indoors? I melted about 4cm^2 of rubber from the glove… My apartment is quite small, and I’ve come back after an hour outside having left all my windows and front door open, but it still smells a bit. It’s 10:30pm so I don’t have anywhere to go really.

I wouldn’t worry about it that much.

[Disclaimer – not expert advice!] Keep the window open in your bedroom and if possible shut the door to the kitchen area. Most of the fumes will probably have gone by now, just stinky stink left. Poor you, hope you sleep ok

Yes, but extremely small compared to smoking 100 cigarettes for example. Many smoker inhale 7300 cigarettes or more every year.

nothing compared to burn-out at a drag strip or victory tire-burning swoops by NASCAR race winner.
