Severe Allergy question?

Asked by questionmotive (1points) June 8th, 2011

Is it rude to for a mother of the groom to have the rehearsal dinner at a restaurant that serves something that the mother of the bride is severely allergic to. Even though she knew it ahead of time!

Do they serve only one thing? Surely the allergic woman can order what she’s not allergic to.

It is actually not possible. Cross contamination is a possibility. Not only would it put the person in the hospital, she would miss her only childs wedding

Maybe talk to the restaurant. What is the allergy? Is the restaurant upscale? They are knowledgable nowadays about allergies and wouldn’t cross-contaminate.

If nothing else, you can bring your own food from home (and explain to the restaurant people ahead of time). Sometimes you just have to suck it up.

Let me guess: Thai food with a fish or peanut allergy?

While I feel for the MotB, it’s not the MotG’s responsibility to make sure that everyone who has an allergy – severe or otherwise – is accommodated for. Cross contamination is always a possibility, but if the MotB is old enough to be the mother of someone getting married, clearly she’s figured out a few tricks for staying alive in this world. The MotB can bring her own food, bring an EpiPen (if that would help), refrain from eating at all, or simply speak to the waitstaff and explain how important it is to avoid cross contamination. However, the rehearsal is about the bride and groom, not the MotB. How many children the MotB has is really irrelevant.

Why assume that the Mother of the Groom understands the severity of the allergy?

This sounds like a situation that the mother of the Bride has been dealing with a long time. Surely she has plans for this situation?

Again, what is the allergy?
