Does anyone else do this to their dog's food?

Asked by Aster (20023points) June 10th, 2011

Our dogs are so spoiled that they will eat canned dogfood once then not touch it again. So the cans are wasted. If I put ground beef, raw or cooked, in it they will sometimes eat the canned food. Does anyone else do this with success?

Nope….won’t do it. Dogs do just fine with the right dry food. Just my opinion. A nice treat now and then….but no people food.

So do you ever change brands of the dry?

Ha. Willow was getting tired of simply eating dry dorg food, so I started putting a tablespoon of canned food under the dry. She finishes every bowl now. And I thought she was spoiled!

that’s weird. Just one tablespoon. lol

Wow! Your dogs really do own you.

Our dog is not at all food motivated and stays pretty skinny. We serve him dry dog food, but “garnish” a bit with a sprinkle of Parmesan, splash of milk, or a tablespoon of red sauce.

I think he likes the attention as much as the food. I’m the cook in the house and he seems to like what I put on his food better – even the identical treatment.

The reason we encourage him to eat it is that we wet the food and it will get soggy and unpalatable if left untouched. Plus one of the cats will eat it for him.

I add a tablespoon of cottage cheese once a week to each of my dog’s dry food.

It’s even worse around my house.

My wife actually cooks meat to add to our dog’s kibble. Usually she does chicken and shreds up a little bit each feeding and tops it with some of the stock she saved. Usually around November they get special treats in the form of venison heart and liver. They absolutely LOVE it!

I’ve always said that if I die first I want to come back as her dog!

I feed raw food all the time, but it is not all that great to mix raw food with cooked food in the same meal. If I were you, I would cook the hamburger before adding it.

No,I am a bad enough cook.
Why should I “botulize” the dog too? ;)

I dump dry food in a bowl whenever it’s empty. Sometimes I dump old grease from the grease can on it. I certainly don’t chart how much my dog eats, or try to get them to eat more than they want!

Why can’t you just put the left over in the fridge and give it to them later? If they’re hungry, they’ll eat it.

No. I prefer dry food since I can leave it all day without any problems (except ants). I will rarely do it since he’ll lick clean his food whenever I feed him.

I have a bad feeling about raw meat.

I don’t spoil my dog (thank goodness he’s not) and if he is then I’ll leave his food in the bowl and refuse to feed him any kind of food. A hungry stomach couldn’t resist any food in the end.

Bad feeling about raw meat? That’s tooooooo funny! What do you think they consumed in the wild for thousands upon thousands of years during their evolution?!

Have ever you learned about certain parasitic worms that linger in raw meat?

Of course they fed on raw meat in ancient times but that when we haven’t yet invented the study and knowledge of certain parasite and diseases in raw meat. Many died in nature because of it. So when people know the best for their dogs they will do it, not letting history to repeat itself.

My dog does fine on a mix of canned and dry dog food. She occasionally gets leftovers mixed in but she doesn’t get that often enough for her to refuse her ordinary food. Then again she’s half labrador, and labs never refuse anything. Although, I tried her on raw meat once and she gave me the worst glare ever, like I was trying to poison her or something. I never bothered trying again. When I give her bones, I cook them just enough to warm them but not make them brittle.

My mum, on the other hand, had a fussy shih-tzu who would eat nothing but ground beef and rice, home-made.

Dogs don’t have the same intolerance that humans do.

Do you put the leftover can in the refridgerator? If so, maybe the dogs don’t like cold food. If this is the case, zap it in the microwave for about 12 to 15 seconds.
I only give my dog dry food.

Sometimes I will mix a decent brand canned food with dry kibble in the bowl and it is eaten right then as apposed to kibble only, which they tend to stretch to the evenings visiting the bowl and having a couple bites at a time. If you chop up the canned food instead of leaving it in the can shape it is more appetizing. If there is extra we have a plastic snap on lid to keep partial cans from spoiling as long as its refrigerated, then nuke it just enough to get it to room temp when we feed it again. We do feed people food just to give a little variety sometimes. A list of some good ones are here http://www.moderndogmagazine.com/articles/10-people-foods-dogs/1896
My dogs love to have sardines with me as long as I’m having “King Oscar” brand. The other brands I can’t stomach so I’m not giving them to my dogs either.
If you really want to blow their minds try giving them some raw stew meat that has almost no fat on it. Just a few chunks once a week and they really look forward to that and recognize the zip lock baggie right away when it’s time to snack. I get a 2 lb package and split it up into 5 or 6 individual snacks and put them in the freezer. I never cook the meat they eat it raw its the best method anyway.

@chyna Yes; I do microwave the canned food most of the time. And I break it up. I don’t leave it in the “can” shape. LOL ! I’m not that lazy!

Dutchess_III's avatar

@Aster…do you think the dog cares? : )

Aster's avatar

@Dutchess_III you mean do I think they care if it’s shaped like a can? LOL I doubt it; but I do think they like it heated up. haha!! They’re so similar to children to me….

Our family has had purebred German shepherds for as long as I can remember. My mom has always bought Eukanuba brand dog food and used a bowl of dry mix with a raw egg mixed in. I’ve never seen a bowl left unfinished!

@Schroedes13 See my German Shepherd?? We ran out of dogfood the other day. Rick whipped up some hotdogs and cornmeal, and cooked it all up. Both dogs AND the cat were at the food bowl that night!
