After I get my HBa in Psych, how long is the masters program and the Phd program?

Asked by desiree333 (3219points) June 14th, 2011

Sorry if the acronyms are not in the right case…

This fall I will be starting my 4 year program at University (honours bachelor of arts) in psychology/philosophy. I plan to major in clinical psychology. I will for sure do the masters program afterwards, and maybe even go all the way to completing the doctrine program. My question is, how long are these two programs?

It depends entirely on the program. The one my friend is in is a doctoral program, and they just give you a masters along the way (not uncommon). I think the program is 3 years of classes and field work, plus a year of an internship. You get the masters after all the classes and field work, but you don’t get the doctorate until you’re done with the internship and doctoral paper.

Most masters programs are 2 years (some are 1–3); most PhD programs are 5–6 years (some end up taking much longer, and once in a while someone finishes in less time).

You don’t have to do a masters before you do a PhD. You could just go straight from your undergrad program into the doctoral (not doctrine) program, and you’ll be done in about 6 years.

@MyNewtBoobs That’s odd, I always thought you had to actually complete the masters before you could even enroll in the doctoral…

@nikipedia Okay, sorry about the word mix-ups. I don’t know the proper names very well as I haven’t even started university yet. So undergrad (4 years) + doctoral (approx. 6 years) should take me about 10 years. Yikes

It will go by like nothing, believe me. Also, I have some friends doing MD/PhD programs—12 years of school for them!

@nikipedia Gasp! I hope I can muster up the willpower for this…

@desiree333 It’s actually pretty common to get degrees along the way.

@MyNewtBoobs Mhmmm, it’s going to be a whole new world that’s for sure! I know someone that is in the doctoral program right now and she is already teaching at a University, I’m pretty sure it is Queens College and she is studying at NYU.

It depends on hoe many required courses you take as opposed to the electives. You could make it shorter by taking required only.

@YARNLADY Okay, I’ll take that advice. Thanks.
