Need ideas for low maintenance yard landscaping.

Asked by HudsonHero (245points) June 15th, 2011

I have come to terms with my deep dislike of yard work. Yet I really want my yard to look nice. What are some low-maintenance plants and ideas for someone living in the Midwest?

Implement some permaculture and companion planting ideas. That’ll cut down maintenances requirements drastically.

Here are some Deer resistant plant ideas.
looked again and that was not the best link. Try this one. It has a better list.

I have a good sized driveway and road out to the barn. I hate edging with my weed whacker. Instead I use Roundup when the grass is growing. In two weeks, it is dead and dried out. Then I set it on fire with my butane torch and let it burn the whole length. It is black until the first rain then it looks great for the rest of the summer. .
Keep a hose, and fire extinguisher or two handy.
Don’t do this if burning is illegal in your community.

Hostas [the ones with strong variegation] for surrounding your trees,
Pick-your-color Dianthus for color [to surround the hostas],
White Flame Phlox for beautiful white flowers that will ground your hostas [put them in the back since they grow to 3’ tall],
and each year you can throw in easy peasy annuals for some pop!

The hostas, dianthus, and phlox are all perennials and they will return each year. The annuals must be planted each year.

Feel free to look up the breeds I mentioned, to get an idea for the exact colors you want. But I promise it will beautiful!

I forgot to ask what side of the house your yard is on; meaning, how much sun does your yard get?

Have your yard planted in SynLawn a synthetic product that looks and feels like real grass.
