[NSFW maybe] Is there a chemical that you can add to a swimming pool that turns black with urine?

Asked by Stinley (11525points) June 20th, 2011

Is it true that some pools have a chemical that turns black if you pee in the pool? So a big cloud of blackness appears between your legs? Or is it an urban myth or story to stop people from peeing in the pool?

According to Wikipedia, it doesn’t exist. I knew those Seventeen magazine confessions were all made up!!!

Ha ha, always wanted to know where that came from? Wonder if they will ever make anything like that, how funny would it be to see those strange people, you know are peeing getting humiliated because the colour starts to show :-)))

I heard it to be purple, not black.

I have always believed the stories to be true my self, seeing as I don’t have any reason to doubt that certain chemicals can cause color changes. Urine has ammonia in it if im not mistaken, so maybe something like copper salts would be enough to cause a color change.

As for me… such a chemical would not stop me, I would find the temptation of writting my name too great to resist.

It appears to be both a tactic parents and other authorities use to get kids to not pee in pools, as well as a threat teens threaten other teens with in an cruel and sadistic attempt to per-humiliate them.

@poisonedantidote It’s not that you couldn’t create such a chemical, so much as that any chemical you did create would be set off constantly by false positives.

If your eyes burn when swimming in a chlorinated pool, somebody peed in it.
