It can be very stressful. One mistake and, bang, hundreds of people die because of you.

I went to grad school with a retired air traffic controller from O’Hare at Chicago. He retired at 37 years old “BURNED OUT”

It’s been a “known” thing in my life that it is maybe the most stressful job.

Put it this way, your in charge of X amount of bleeps imaged on a disc the size of a Frisbee.. In your face, but that’s not the worst of it.. Everybody else’s blips are also included on said Frisbee and you must maneuver between their paths as well, and these blips? Each one could represent from 2 to 300+ people that you are responsible for.. YES! ATC is beyond stressful.
