What is some good go-go music from the 1960's?

Asked by jca (36062points) June 24th, 2011

I am looking for some good go-go music from the 1960’s. I mean “girls in cages with white go-go boots on,” the type of stuff that Austin Powers might be listening to.

One time I was traveling and on an oldies station, they played a great “go-go” type song and of course, they didn’t say who the group was, but I thought “I want to hear more of that type of music.” It was Groovy, Baby!

Well, the one in the club is Incense and Peppermints by Strawberry Alarm Clock. The original soundtrack is here, and the more music from soundtrack is also good, as is the sequel. You could create a Pandora station with the songs you like from those songs, and it’ll play more of the same type of music.

How about the theme from Austin Powers itself: The Soul Bossa Nova?

I don’t know that either of them are gogo, but you can always do Bee-Gees (Stayin’ Alive, Saturday Night Fever) and Three Dog Night (One, Shambala).

According to Wikipedia, Chuck Brown is the “father” of gogo. Other artists include The Young Senators, Black Heat, Aggression, Brute, And The Echos, Tommy Vann & The Professionals, The Mixed Breed, Scacy & The Sound Service, 95th Congress, 100 Years Time, Experience Unlimited (EU), Sound Extended, Spectrum, 2000 A.D., Lead Head, Symba, Distance, Ashante, Kalidescope, The NoWhere Men, Free Form Experience, The Jaguars, The Corvettes, The Epsilons, The New Breed, Lawrence & The Arabians, Sir Joe & The Free Souls, Ray Johnson’s Esquires, Sons of Nature, and The Fathers Children.

It’s corny, but ”Let’s Dance On” by The Monkees came to mind. ”I Can’t Help Myself” by The Four Tops is another.

This one isn’t corny: ”I’m Not Your Steppin’ Stone” performed (secondly) by The Monkees, but written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart and sung by lots of bands.

Oh, you gotta listen to some ‘of The Monkees’...I was hot in my Go Go boots in about 1968, when I WAS 8! lol To be really cool you left the zippers down a couple of inches. :-D

Some Petula Clark, of course!

@Coloma Did having the zippers down a bit signal your sexual readiness or something?

I can’t help it… you said boots and I think of Nancy Sinatra, These Boots Were Made For Walking Having a famous dad did nothing for her dancin’ skills.

@MyNewtBoobs

It was just the ‘groovey’ thing to do. ;-)

@Coloma we did not leave ours unzipped up here in Canada. A group of us ‘danced’ “these boots” on stage at the local theatre in our so white, so not comfortable gogo boots. Those were the days, my friend…..
