What neat things can I make using old house windows?

Asked by hopscotchy (552points) June 29th, 2011

I recently acquired about 10 old windows. I found a pile for free in my neighborhood and thought they would make some cool…something. They look kind of like this except mine don’t have panes, just solid glass with a wooden frame. Any creative ideas out there? Thanks!

Living room table or a desk. Or put pictures in them and try to mount them so it looks like a real window with different scenes outside. .

Picture frames
Or just hang the whole sash on a bare wall…

If you live in a cold climate you can make a “cold frame” for starting veggie and flower seeds.

If you are handy at sawing and nailing you can construct a mini green house for flowers or vegatables.

Paint them with glass paint, and give them as Christmas (or other holiday of your choice) presents. You can get glass paint at most craft stores.

Replace the glass with mirror. You could also build shallow boxes and attach the window with hinges to make shadow boxes.

One of my best friends owns a boutique where she used an old window as her sign behind her register area. Her window did have panes but I think it would work either way. She took vintage fabric and covered letters to spell the name of the store and hung it over the letters in addition to a few branches. It looks awesome. I realize it may sound a little odd. She’s used that same idea to make baby shower gifts (with the baby’s name) and even one that was simply hung over a photo collection. I think they all were very unique and am hunting for an old window to transform into a shadowbox

You could hang a few that match in style from the ceiling to affect a floating wall/room separator or hang them in a V shape to mimic a cubicle area.
