Boring question #96: Do bike manufacturers actually think that padding on the upper bike frame actually helps?

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) July 4th, 2011

There is a bike shop near my house and I peek in time to time. The BMX bikes they sell have padded sleeves on the upper bike frame and between the handlebars. If a boy is doing a trick and he slips off the seat onto the upper frame, do they actually think that pad is going to protect his family jewels from hurting as if someone tried to bat is innards up and out of his throat? If a waffle ball to the groin can double a kid over into a fetal position writhing in pain do they think his full body weight on that frame is not going to hurt even with the pads? Where did they get that ideal or is it just to make the bike look ”cool”?

I don’t understand why they don’t make all bikes “girl” bikes to begin with? I don’t know the answer to your question, so I’ll follow to see if someone does know.

Trust me, they help a bit if for no reason other than spreading the impact. It still hurts, but it prevents/lessens injury, just as getting shot with a bulletproof vest may crack a couple of ribs while keeping a bullet out of the lungs. As for the handlebar pad, they are why I didn’t lose my front teeth when I was a kid; I have had a use for that one too.
