What's a movie (or story/book/etc) you both loathe and love?

Asked by tedd (14078points) July 6th, 2011

I was talking with a friend about Kate Winslet, and the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind came up. I haven’t seen it in a while but I remember thinking it was such a good movie, but hating it at the same time for dredging up so many memories of past loves. In fact I sent my copy of the movie to an x-g/f in an act of youthful drama. So well done, great acting, the story…. and yet the scenes brought out memories of very similar scenes I’d lived out.

What’s a story, or movie, or book, or whatever that you both love and hate at the same time? Reasons for loving or hating do not need to be the same as mine for ESotSM.

Life is Beautiful. I loved the movie, but the ending was so depressingly sad, that I haven’t been able to watch it again.

Bond movies.
Love : They entertain, are action packed & deliver what it says on the tin.
Loathe : Formularic, predictable campfest.

Book: Steppenwolf because Haller and I are way too similar and there was/is someone in my life who is similar to Hermine.

Star Wars. I love the original 1976 film, I like but have some issues with the next two, and I sort of want to like the prequel trilogy, but mostly hate them for many reasons. The most recent three all seem like messed up disappointments compared to the original, though I liked watching even those because they were sort of like more Star Wars, but also hated them for letting down the original in so many ways. (No replies on this thread – wouldn’t want to hijack it with the never-ending topic.)

The book The Bridges of Madison County. I freaking loved the story line, but hated the writing. It was truly awful, but that story… what a hook it had in me.
