What's so great about Google +?

Asked by KateTheGreat (13640points) July 9th, 2011

In the past week, I’ve had 6 people to invite me to join Google +. What’s so good about it? What makes it better than any other social networking site?

And what the heck is it?

It’s like Facebook but it’s not Facebook.

To answer the question:

It is yet another attempt by Google to get into the social media realm (orkut, buzz and wave didn’t do it for them).

It is still early release, so there isn’t a lot to it yet, but what is there is pretty nice. There are ways to share media, video chat with friends, post stuff, etc. I think this attempt has a shot at competing with Facebook.

RESIST. RESIST, RESIST…..read “1984” first. Then decide.

They are already datamining everything you do. Now you’re going to give them even more information. I am refusing.

If Facebook isn’t professional enough for you, try Linkedin.

I’ve only been on it a few days and still messing around. I’ll let ya know. I do like the “circles” concept fir organizing friends.

I’m also still determining if a need a “Social Network” at all. If Google+ fails to impress, I may just delete my Facebook account and call it a day.

@DarlingRhadamanthus Not sure G+ is any worse than Facebook. At least the Google guys don’t have a reputation for gathering info to use against their petty enemies. And if you already have a Gmail account, you’ve already handed them everything they need.

It is like Facebook, but with more features and more customization (usually more control over privacy). They have “huddles”, which is for when you’re trying to get together with a bunch of people, but you have to organize where everyone’s going, who needs a ride, are you getting Greek food from that one place or going to the movie… So then it creates one streamlined chat instead of having it all be separate conversations.
I do like the circles aspect much better than lists. Lists are useless for status updates, but you can use circles for G+ status updates. So I can do a status update about how much I love tequila, but only to the people whom I drink with, or post a political article, but only to people who would appriciate it…

I like it better. And it’s pretty easy to create a profile, put in some tester info and updates to try it, and then if you don’t like it, you can delete it. The only way to know if you’ll like it or not is to try it.

And you should really let people know that you already have an invite so they don’t keep wasting theirs.

@Aethelflaed Nah, people are just asking me if I want them. They haven’t technically invited me yet. I just don’t think I want one. I hate being on more than one social network!

Aethelflaed's avatar

@KatetheGreat Yeah, I can totally see that. I’m not big on FB myself, but I like the added control of G+. Most of the time, I could post a status update on FB, but it’s too much of a pain to always go and change my “custom” option to all the people I don’t want to see it, so I just don’t post it. But I’ve used G+ more in the past 48ish hours than I’ve used Facebook in a month, because it’s so easy for me to post my musings on historical pubic hair (true story) while making sure my aunt and teachers and people with no sense of humor don’t see it. It becomes a lot more like my Twitter feed, but without the 140 character limit.

I’ve been “in” for a little over a day now. I find the layout confusing and there aren’t many people around right now I know well to interact with. But “Circles” is a feature Facebook should have introduced ages ago.

I don’t like Facebook but when nearly everyone I know is on it it is difficult to change to something else.

I haven’t tried Google plus but someone mentioned it to me. I shall have to look it up.

@Bellatrix You can only join by invite. And I heard that cats aren’t allowed. ;)
