There are many ways to make a site, and yes it can be free, but you should expect to pay a little bit to get a name and keep the site online.

There are many ways of making a site, but as far as I am concerned there is only one real way of making a site, and thats to make it your self from scratch, without using strange websites and things.

First, you need a name. this will cost about $10 a year. Then you will need a place to host, this will also cost something to do properly.

I could write a big book for you right now about all the things you could and should do, but so to not overload you, I will simply tell you that you need to google the following things:

HTML
CSS
JavaScript
PHP
WYSIWYG
Dream Weaver

If you know how to look things up and follow thru on the questions you generate with what you find, the search terms above should be enough to get you started.

I made one as an experiment.

You need to contact a host provider (I used Host Gator, I think it is 10 bucks a month), and register the domain name with an internet registry provider (30 bucks).

You give your host provider the domain you registered. They will then let you upload files to their servers and update the site.

I used Word Press, which is a free program that lets you set up a blog. The directions are simple and its free. It took about 4 hours all in to have a blog up and running. I saved the files I created in the WordPress templates to the Host Provider’s computers, and then clicked publish. It was working.

There are a number of hosts that offer free sites as a subdomain of theirn main domain, and they litter your soite wit advertising to pay for it.

If you want a bit more, there are online tools that will help you build a decent looking site, but expect to pay a modest fee to get your own domain name and to rent some space on a shared hosting server where you can put it. Some hosting services offer an all-in-one package where they sign you up with a domain name, provide you some hosting space, and give you the tools to create your own design. Thise are the easiest to work with, though not necessairly the least expensive. In any case, we should be talking just a few bucks a month, so unless you are penniless it shouldh;t be a deal breaker.

Content is key. What type of website you create depends on your abilities, needs, and content. If this is something you would be updating regularly (like you want to track experiments with cooking, or post photographs once in awhile), then you should get a blog. Wordpress has a great reputation. I have used Blogger for a number of years, no major issues. It’s easy to get started, but if you choose to learn some HTML, XML, CSS, and Photoshop (or GIMP, which is free), you can get creative and make your own template.

If you’re looking to catalog information, a traditional website might be best. Say if you want an online portfolio of your art or writing or you have a collection you’d like to display. Or just if you want your content organized in a different way than the chronological focus of a blog. Google has a free service for this. Back in the day (like, ten years ago), I used both Tripod and 150m. Both still exist. Google “free web hosting” for more options. Again, learn HTML, etc. and you will have many more options.

Personal blogs are more popular these days than personal websites… but I always had more fun making the old school websites.

@Tay122 Any particular reason you want a website as opposed to just a persona blog?

I tried to create a website once with the help of the book “Websites for dummies 2007”
My website was not the best, but I did it.
First decide what you want to do and what’s your website all about.
I did a lot of reading on websites and there is a few websites that could give you a few tips.
A blog is cheaper you could always try that as well.
Or open a Facebook page, Twitter page and could work as well.

Making your own website can be free as there are so many great tools out there for everyone to use. A lot of people have already posted some great options!

Tumblr is really awesome because it has so many different themes you can choose from. I’ve always had a website since I was 12 years old, and it’s sort of a habit to have one now, haha!

If you want our own name like evileggs.com or something you’d have to pay for the name registration and the webhosting. It’d be an annual cost of anywhere from $60 to $300, all depending on how much investment you put into it.

I wish you luck! :D

There are many ways you can create your own website and it is free. Every website consists of two parts first the Domain and second is its Web Host. I think the best way to create a website is from online tutorials.
I would also like to share an online tutorial OpenWebsiteTutorials.com, where I learnt how to make your own website. It is a step by step practical guide that you can follow. Good Luck!

@Alice_Slade Hi and welcome to Fluther. The link is to a relatively new and unknown (Unrated so far in WebOfTrust) but you are certainly right that you can use Web resources to figure out how to do it yourself. You can also find tons of Web resources which are little more than affiliate marketing programs trying to make a few bucks off this or that domain name registrar, or hosting service. OpenWebsiteTutorials appears to conform to that mold.

This thought brought to you by one of Fluther’s resident Web Developers with no intention of selling anything in particular by sharing it.
