What are some apps you would suggest for the iPhone/iPod Touch?

Asked by KatawaGrey (21483points) July 10th, 2011

I have recently gotten an iPod Touch and I have been looking for apps to put on it. Mostly, I prefer free apps, but I don’t mind paying a buck or two for a really great one.

So, Jellies, what are some apps that you suggest? Feel free to throw anything out there. You may suggest something that I may have previously overlooked but will give a second chance to!

It’s good to be back. I missed you guys.

Apps are kind of a personal thing so I don’t really have any except this one to recomment unless you are looking for something to do something specific, but this one, Photo Transfer, is an absolute must have , in my opinion, if you take pictures with your iPhone and everyone probably does. It is about the easiest way to transfer photos from your iPhone to your computer. It works for the iPad too. I have an older iPad that doesn’t have a camera but I sometimes like to transfer images from the iPhone to the iPad so I have a bigger image to show people. And Photo Transfer works like a charm. If you try it and it doesn’t, check the trouble shooting guide.

Though Pandora is great of course, and I might have a couple more to suggest. I will look on my “devices” to see if there’s anything you can’t live without though there probably isn’t.

If you are a sleepyhead, I can’t recommend the WakeMate highly enough. The app is free. The device is $60.

Checkword is good if you still play the Scrabble board game.

There are a bunch of good tracking apps for ski season, such as Maprika.

A second browser is sometimes useful. Opera and Full Browser are two options.

GoodReader is useful to me mainly if I’m trying to read a .pdf, because it will reflow the text to make it easier to read on the screen.

If you meditate, you might like Equanimity, which is a specialized timer with alarm.

I haven’t had my iPhone long but here are the ones I use so far. iRadio is great, Kindle reader, SketchBook, RunKeeper, Flashlight, Grocery List, Backgammon and of course, Angry Birds and Plants vs. Zombies.

If you walk or bike or run, runkeeper is fantastic to keep track of your distance, times, etc.

Pocket Penguins! The California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco have a live cam on their penguin exhibit at all times. There are three different views, including an underwater one. It’s so fun to check in on the little guys and see what they’re up to.

Pandorabox (has nothing to do with the Pandora radio app) is terrific if you like bargain hunting for Apps.

In addition to listing new apps, both free and paid, it tracks apps which are price-droped for a brief period of time and you can score some really great apps for very little money.

It’s a little known fact that developers reduce prices (sometimes down to free) for a variety of reasons. Many do it to get more reviews, others do it in conjunction with various seasonal holidays. One guy even put all of his apps on free for a week to celebrate the birth of his son.

Thanks to the tracking capabilities of this fabulous app, I’ve scored lots of apps for half price or even free. I have tons of free apps parked on my computer in the iTunes store listing.

Also, once you have an app, all the subsequent updates are without charge.

There are others I use on a daily basis. I no longer need a bedside clock thanks to Clock GT or Desk Clock. There are tons of other free clock apps as well as Flashlight apps which I also use on a regular basis.

TheFind is a much used app for me because it enables me to search for local stores which carry any particular item for which I’m currently shopping and price comparing. Also, lists web sources for same item. Saves me tons of time and gas.

If you’re a fan of Sudoku logic puzzles, two of the ones with the clearest and best interface are Sudoku Daily and Sudoku 101. The latter also has a step by step “Teach Me” feature if you get stuck.
————————————————————

I’m also a big fan of word games and there are a ton of free ones of varying difficulty and quality. PM me for the ones I’ve found the best.

That’s pretty much it for me. But if I could only reco one, it would definitely be Pandorabox since it has made me aware of so many that I would never have discovered otherwise.

That’s how I found Fluther :)
The app turned out to be too crippled in functionality to be useful, but switching to the regular mobile version in Safari cured that and I never would have known about it were it not for Pandorabox.

Thanks everyone! I’ve downloaded a bunch of new apps from this list. I know apps are a somewhat personal thing, but since there are so many, I like to hear what other people like, in case there is something I overlooked or just never thought to look for.

@8Convulsions: I actually downloaded that app yesterday and then my mom downloaded it after reading this thread! It’s a great app. :)
