Does this look like the Lyme disease bull's eye rash?

Asked by gailcalled (54644points) July 16th, 2011

I have found several tiny ticks walking around my arm over the past few days… about the size of a poppy seed. They were not embedded, but this showed up last night, c. 1” x 1.3” Here

It looks like a bruise in the photos. From what I remember, the bull’s eye is usually a distinctive bull’s eye pattern… but a doctor could tell you for sure, of course.

This is not tender to the touch, as all bruises are.

It looks too uniform in color to be a lyme disease rash. They call it a bull’s eye because it really does look like a bull’s eye. See here:

Also, I’ve been told a few times by our doctor that a deer tick has to be attached for 24 to 48 hours before transmission of the disease is possible.

That being said, if you have concerns you should give your doctor a call. :)

Not every rash has the center white spot. In any case, I have drawn an outline with a sharpie and can tell whether the spot grows over the next few days.

I will see the Doctor or his med. assistant or nurse on Monday.

It does not look like a bullseye however lymes disease can present as an homogeneously red rash.

Better safe than sorry. Get tested.

Lisa asked me to look in on this. I can’t help, sorry. I’ve never seen a Lyme Disease rash.

@Rarebear: Thanks for weighing in. I am bringing my photo and my rash to Doc’s on Monday. I did trap a Lyme tick larva or nymph (I can’t tell) walking up my arm just now, so I’ll bring that also. It’s about this size. *

There are several nasty tick-borne diseases here now.

Just in looking at it again, it just looks like a local allergy to a bugbite.

@Rarebear: That would make sense, since I have been getting bitten by black flies and other unidentified bugs. The bites often last for several weeks and I have had an issue with dermatographism for 20 years.

The area is the same size and same coloration as it was on Friday night when I took the pic and feels smooth to the touch and doesn’t itch.

But the tick diseases around here are increasing both in severity and in numbers. I know many people with chronic issues and severe long term discomfort, so I am concerned.

So I will try to cut in line at my doctor’s office tomorrow. I rarely jump the queue so I am hoping that I can sneak in tomorrow.

@gailcalled let us know what you find out, please.

Reporting back, I can breathe easier tonight. The wonderful physician’s assistant (now there’s a career path for a young person to consider) said it looked like a bruise, it acted like a bruise and it quacked like a bruise. She used a magnifying glass to see whether the skin had been broken anywhere, and it hadn’t.

There was no roughness or irregularity on the skin that would normally indicate a rash. And the area was under a slight bone deformity that showed up when a fractured radius healed, grew extra calcium and and caused the end of the ulna to bump out a little. Bruise was on the end of the ulna.

Sadly, the tick (this big ˚ ) that I had carefully dropped into alcohol last night and planned to bring for show-and-tell had vanished this morning.

@gailcalled so happy to hear that it wasn’t anything worse than that!
