What are some good books for learning how to play piano?

Asked by arches140 (72points) July 17th, 2011

Hi all, I’ve been wanting to teach myself how to play piano for some years now. I used to play flute in high school, so I know a little about reading music, but I haven’t played for almost 10 years, so I’d definitely be a beginner for learning how to play piano. Can you suggest some books to start with?

My piano teacher (100 years ago) gave me Anna Magdalina’s Notebook
It was songs that Bach wrote to teach his wife piano.

@Axemusica, does this really work, or are you trying to make a point…? :/

I’m currently reading Illistrator CS4 for dummies. Have no shame. ;)

If you are just starting out learning to play piano, Piano for Dummies is actually good book to start with. I have this book and it has some detailed and relevant information on how to play. You may also want to purchase music dictionaries and books on music theory.

Before you start playing, you may want to just read about the history of the piano, how to play properly, refresh your memory on the notes and time signatures. In my opinion, you don’t really need to go inot the complicated details of music theory. You just need to know the very basics, like what I listed.

Hal Leonard has some great lesson books for beginners, even if you are an adult.

@AshlynM ya I started with Hal Leonard books and they’re great. I’d also recommend once you start to grab some Royal Conservatory of Music books.
