When you perform, how do you keep the crowd interested?

I am trying to think of all my favorite bands I enjoy seeing, not only for the music——but more for their presence. They’re usually upbeat, have unique instruments and most of all… funny. What do you think are the ingredients to keeping a crowd’s eyes on you?
