Anyone know anything about the Astronomy Masters program at University of Washington, Seattle?

Asked by finkelitis (1907points) July 18th, 2011

Someone I know is interested in applying to the UW’s Astronomy Masters program. Does anyone know if it’s a good program? Do you know anyone who’s had a good experience in it? Anyone who’d be willing to chat with my friend about it at greater length?

I don’t but wonder about such a degree. All professional Astronomers and Astrophysicists need PhD’s. What would an Astronomy Masters be in aid of?

The info on the Astronomy page talks only about a Master’s degree as part of the ongoing PhD program. The faculty, on paper, seems distinguished, and I recognized an old buddy who got his PhD and taught at Harvard when I was working there, who is now Emeritus at UW.

I’m not familiar with the program, but imagine the credentials would likely qualify one to teach high school/community college or to work at an educational museum or kid’s summer camp. That’s probably about it. Think carefully before dropping 30k on a program like this.
