What is hummus made of?

Asked by blueberry_kid (5957points) July 18th, 2011

I love to eat hummus. All the time. Especially with pita chips, even warm pita bread. What is it made of? Mustard seed?

Here is a recipe that’s rated pretty highly. The main ingredient is garbanzo beans.

According to Wiki, it’s made out of chickpeas.

For what it’s worth, chickpeas and garbanzo beans are the same thing according to @Symbeline‘s wiki article.

Chickpeas and sesame paste with garlic and lemon juice.

Yes, it is made of Chick Peas/Garbanzo beans..same thing, good stuff!

I’m one of those strange ones that actually LOVES the 3 bean salads with Garbanzo beans and green beans, wax beans and kidney beans…I can eat buckets of that stuff. haha

When I used to take my horse out on trail rides I always packed my saddle bag with humus, french bread and a couple of beers. haha

Wow, I think you mean hummus. Humus is a kind of soil.

You have come to the right place. I’m making that tomorrow.

It is usually made with garbanzo beans, which are pulverized in a blender (or back in the old days people used a mortar and pestle) with tahini, which is sesame seed paste (kind of like peanut butter only a little bit bitter) garlic, lemon juice and olive oil.

Here is a standard hummus recipe

Hummus can also be made with other kinds of beans (although the “real” hummus uses garbanzo beans). White beans, such as cannelini or Great Northern or white navy beans are often used in hummus. And other items can also be added to any kind of bean hummus such as parsley, cilantro or basil or even red pepper.

Here’s a recipe for white bean and basil hummus

Here’s one for roasted red bell pepper hummus

Here’s one for cilantro jalapeno hummus

Here’s one for black bean hummus

Here’s one for red kidney bean hummus

And here is one for green hummus with parsley oil

This last recipe is not technically hummus (because it is not made with beans, but seeds and it has no tahini) but the recipe called it hummus and it sounded incredible so here is pumpkin seed hummus with lime and cayenne

So, as Jeruba points out, humus is made of rotting vegitables and animal flesh.

Thank you in advance for all the lurve.

When I saw the question, my first thought was the dirt.

CWOTUS's avatar

Well, I’m sure you meant “hummus”, the food product (made most often from garbanzo beans / chick peas). Because @incendiary_dan is right: humus is dirt.

And I’m sure that @Jeruba is thrilled to have beaten me to the response this time.
