Do you use your hand or a cup to wash out your mouth after brushing?

Asked by AshlynM (10684points) July 20th, 2011

I’ve seen people bend their head and put their mouth under the faucet. Why do that when you can easily use your hand?

I rinse out my mouth by drinking from a water bottle.

I use my hand. I like to leave a little toothpaste in my mouth so it stays minty fresh longer.

Growing up, my family used little, paper Dixie cups. We went through tons of them – I always thought it was so wasteful.

So when I moved out, I started using my hands (cupped, like a bowl).

I bend and put my mouth under the tap. I can get a good mouthful of water that way. My hand isn’t big enough.

I bend over and drink the water from under that tap. Same problem as @downtide plus I end up dripping water on myself.

I bend over and drink the water from the tap it’s easier coz it’s to cold and I don’t wanna get my hands wet lol

My hand.

About half the time I brush my teeth while taking a shower. I just rinse from the shower head.

I use my hand.

I bend and drink from the faucet.
When we redesigned the bathroom, I had a tall faucet put in specially so I could do this.

I find my hand quite handy for this function.

I don’t rinse after brushing. You’re not supposed to. Rinsing gets rid of all the toothpaste residue, which might be annoying, but is helpful. Those toothpastes that promise to freshen your breath or protect against plaque for 12 hours – if you rinse, you get none of those benefits.

I don’t rinse. I used a cup for years, when I did rinse.

wundayatta's avatar

Um, why not? It’s easier. I’ll bend and drink from the faucet if the faucet is high enough. Otherwise I use my hand. Somehow the idea of using a cup of water grosses me out. I don’t want to drink recycled toothpaste.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@wundayatta you don’t drink from the cup, you use it to sip and swish and spit. lol.

wundayatta's avatar

@ANef_is_Enuf Do you or do you not take water from the foam-infested cup into your mouth? I’m sorry. It’s gross.

mangeons's avatar

I use paper cups, mainly because my hands are too small to use, and we have a low faucet so that’s also out of the question.

As for not rinsing, I don’t think I could live without rinsing after brushing my teeth, seeing as I can’t stand the taste of mint.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@wundayatta wait, why is it foam infested? I don’t understand…

wundayatta's avatar

@ANef_is_Enuf Because you’ve taken one sip already. There is always backwash. Can we stop talking about this? I’m getting more and more creeped out.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

Sorry. But just for the record, I only take one sip. If that makes you feel better. :)

wundayatta's avatar

@ANef_is_Enuf I see. Yes. That does make a difference. I generally take two or three mouth swishes.

See, sometimes I see someone’s tooth glass (as a friend of mine so colorfully calls it) and there’s toothpaste caked in the bottom corners of the cup. I don’t know. Old toothpaste? I mean, really! I don’t even want to know how it gets there.

Geez. I think I need to go take a shower. I guess we all have our little obsessions.

mangeons's avatar

@wundayatta I hate using actual cups for that same reason, they get disgusting over time and I don’t want to re-use that, hence using disposable paper cups.

I just use a plastic cup, then hork it all out like a gangster.
