Leslie and Marion immediately come to mind as much more traditionally feminine unisex names.

Morgan, Dakota.

Tracey, Kelly, Ashley.

Brooke. (Because everyone beat me to the others!)

Sal, Gabby, Gale…

Scooby's avatar

Shirley….. :-/

JLeslie's avatar

Thought of another, Shelly.

@mazingerz88 I never think of Sal as feminine, but I guess it can be.

mazingerz88's avatar

@JLeslie Yes, now I recall Percy Bysshe Shelley…

There was this actor I think named Sal Mineo-?

Seaofclouds's avatar

Robin and Stacy come to mind since I know guys with those names.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Francis / Frances sounds the same to me.

JLeslie's avatar

@mazingerz88 Yes, Sal Mineo looks like my husband. :). To me Sal is masculine. Salvador, Salomon. But, I guess some people think Sally?

blueberry_kid's avatar

Stacey, Jamie, or Jessie.

Robin (That’s my ex’s name. He has 7 sisters. He’s the only boy. Six of the girls are older than him. When his Mom was pg, she assumed he would be a girl too.)

JLeslie's avatar

@Dutchess_III Gosh, you would think after 7 girls they would have been willing to give the kid a very masculine name. LOL. Meanwhile, I think of Robin as very neutral, but it is given to girls more now.

I love that you use pg. Funny.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well, she was 6 months pregnant when she saw a robin in the park and picked that name for the baby and stuck with it after he was born (this was, obviously, in the days before we could determine the sex of a baby before they were born. I tried to say ‘in utero’ but spell check flagged it and I wasn’t sure if I was using it correctly so I didn’t say that… ; ) I’ve known lots of women named Robin. My ex is the only guy I know with that name.

Chris is a good name!

Fanny.

JLeslie's avatar

@ucme You know a man named fanny?

JLeslie's avatar

I have another one.

Jamie.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

Shannon.
Also, “Sal” is a masculine name in my mind.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@ANef_is_Enuf I’ve heard Sally shortened to Sal.

JLeslie's avatar

I know a man named Shannon. That’s a good one.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe I have, too. I know a woman named “Sal.” I just think of Sal as a masculine name before I think of it as a feminine name. It can go both ways… just seems more masculine to me.

gondwanalon's avatar

I saw a boy’s name that surprised me last week. It was “Caitlin”.

Scooby's avatar

Nancy….. :-/

Lorain….. :-/

DominicX's avatar

I don’t think “Jamie” and “Dakota” are that feminine…I think they’re cute and I’d consider naming my son those…

Something like “Stacey” on the other hand is almost exclusively associated with girls these days. Same with “Lindsay”, “Ashley”, and “Aubrey”.

JilltheTooth's avatar

Wow, @DominicX , I have never known a girl Aubrey, and I’ve known 5 Aubreys! There’s an imbalance in the Force.

DominicX's avatar

Well, maybe it’s because I’ve only known two Aubreys and they were both girls (and one was considered to be one of the hottest girls in school by almost every guy) and the name comes from a misspelling of “Audrey”, which is a girl’s name.

JilltheTooth's avatar

BTW, @DominicX , you and your mom…too cute!

chyna's avatar

@JilltheTooth Aubrey Hepburn? Or do I have that wrong? My friend named her daughter Abrianna, which could be shortened to Aubrey.
I like Sammy as a girls name.

Edit to add: I just looked it up, it is Audrey. Sorry Jill.

JLeslie's avatar

I know one Aubrey who is a girl, young girl; but all others are men.

There is many times a progression from surname, to male name, to female name. Although not always in that order of course.

Kelly, Madison, Shannon, and more I think were surnames first. The biblical names I guess were all first names first? But, eventually became surnames because a person was the son of. For instance Isaac Ben Solomon would be Isaac the son of Solomon before surnames were in use. Or, that is how I understand it to be. i am not very knowledgeable on the topic.

chyna's avatar

I know a younger guy named Courtney that I always thought of as a girls name. If someone else has mentioned this, sorry, I just skimmed the above posts.

DominicX's avatar

@JilltheTooth Thanks! :)

@JLeslie Interesting to note that “Madison” was popularized almost entirely by the movie “Splash”.

JLeslie's avatar

I think Courtney was a surname originally also. A lot of the Irish names were, as noted in my previous post, although I am not Isre Courtney is Irish? Might be British.

@DominicX Yeah, that movie did influence the popularity of the name Madison.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

I’ve known several men with “girlie” names:

Shannon (who is a very large, built, intimidating, utterly lovely black man, lol)
Ashley
Courtney
Tracy
Leslie
Robin

Dutchess_III's avatar

I used to know a guy named Sal. He was Hispanic so it was probably short for Salvador or something.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Hey Sal! You ever going to tell us why the Dr. said you needed to leave your arms and legs uncovered?

AshLeigh's avatar

Jordan.
Dakota.
That’s all I got…

ucme's avatar

@JLeslie Well it’s Danny actually, but he has this speech impediment…..

YARNLADY's avatar

@PhiNotPi You know a male with the name Elizabeth? I never heard of that.
@rebbel You have heard of a girl named Dick? that’s a new one on me.

AshLeigh's avatar

I know a guy named Kianna. :)

athenasgriffin's avatar

Aaron makes me think of the most feminine woman I know named Erin, but that might be personal.

FutureMemory's avatar

I knew a kid in school named Shannon. After one particular Summer vacation he came back and said his new name was Kyle (his middle name). I’ve always thought it was a cool name for a guy.

Berserker's avatar

Gabriel in French is pronounced exactly like Gabrielle, so that I guess.

But if that dun count cuz they’re not spelled the same, or because the male version probably existed before the female version, I have to go for Ashley.

ratboy's avatar

Maria as in “Rainer Maria Rilke.” Sal Mineo.

Samant's avatar

@JilltheTooth I only heard of Lady Marion from Robin Hood.
Is Sally unisex?
@Aqua What about Kimberly?
@rebbel Dick is really not unisex!
@AshLeigh Kianna is really cute! :)

AshLeigh's avatar

@Samant, I thought so too. :)

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Marion Mitchell Morrison also known as John Wayne.

JLeslie's avatar

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies I worked with a woman named Randy a while back. We used to have this one rep come into the store who was originally from the UK and he said it was very hard to call her randy. LOL.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

Yes, Randy can be used in numerous ways. My brother Randy has learned that lesson many times.

Gabby101's avatar

I work with a guy named Rene. It’s pronounced just like the girl version. He hates it.

Gabby101's avatar

Also, Gale (male) vs. Gail (female).

blueberry_kid's avatar

@gabby94805 Did you get that from “The Hunger Games”?

Gabby101's avatar

Gale from Breaking Bad and Rene was my old boss.
