How hard is it to buy new CDs and new CD players in stores your region?

Asked by flo (13313points) July 22nd, 2011

Do you feel everyone should mainly use the digital format, and only use the vinyl for eg. for collection related purposes? Do you get mad at people who like vinyl, CDs etc? Do you feel like they are dragging society back?

No. To do so would be the height of idiocy.

Why would anyone get mad at someone for buying vinyl records/cds?

flo's avatar

@FutureMemory, @Michael_Huntington it makes no sense why they get irked, but how hard is it in your region to see a store that sells new CDs?

There’s a Wal Mart down the road from me. It’s a 5 minute drive and they have CDs (albeit no good ones).

There’s a place called McKay’s that sells thousands of books, CDs, and vinyl albums, as well as films and video games about 20 minutes from my house. They sell a SHIT TON of CDs and records.

I have a pretty extensive vinyl collection that I listen to regularly. All of my CDs have since been digitized, but I still have the discs in my collection.

There are lots of stores here that sell CDs and CD players? Is this not the case where you are @flo. As to vinyl, there are now stores around the place that are only selling vinyl. I have no problem with this or people choosing to buy vinyl.

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard Does Mckay’s sell brand new products? And is it at risk of shutting down like Blockbusters for eg.?

beaglelove's avatar

Really easy. You practically just walk in the store and buy them. And no i’m not mad at people who collect vinyl lol. That’s their choice and are not dragging society back in any way as other people will continue to buy CDs or DVDs and digitals anyway.

flo's avatar

@beaglelove That is good you have choices.

@flo sometimes. And they are at no risk of closing.

What is your motivation behind asking this question?

filmfann's avatar

It’s a 3 minute drive to Frys Electronics and Rasputins Records.
Very convenient.

flo's avatar

@Bellatrix vinyl yes, I think it is getting more and more valuable. Some people were discussing Blockbusters and why they went bankrupt and this question came to mind. @Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard _What is your motivation behind asking this question?_it is just generally there is too much jumping into new things without examining them.
@filmfann how rare is this kind of store?

I think Blockbusters (if it is the same as here) would have gone broke because of people downloading music/films/tv shows rather than the vinyl situation. People like antiques, but they aren’t going to put contemporary furniture manufacturers out of business.

I have heard it said that the sound from an analogue recording is better than the sound from a digital recording (I had to look it up but it has something to do with the extent to which the sound wave is captured. How often the sound wave is sampled I think). I still have all my vinyl albums and my husband has boxes of them. We don’t have a turntable at the moment though. Must rectify that. It just feels wrong to throw away something we have loved so much.

I never see CD players anymore. I see the disc man type but not the component sound system units. To listen to my CD’s I have the DVD player inputted through my power amp. Not near as convenient but it works.

I still listen to Cassettes, CD’s, and I don’t own an IPod…I don’t want to have to purchase something that you need a credit card with.

The WalMarts near me have both CDs and CD players, as do the Targets. They don’t always have great selection, but I am a bit picky. However, where box stores fail me in options, Amazon.com does not. And there are tons of independent shops for buying vinyl or used cds (not that I ever shop there, but I know I could if I wanted to).
No, I’m not mad at people who buy vinyl. I do get mad when they get mad at me for being fine with digital, though.

While up in my attic today i found an original Sony Walkman. Of course the original headphones were gone ages ago. Haven’t yet tried to see if it still works but I do remember it was quite expensive new, maybe over a 100 bucks back then. It would be the only thing I still have to use my 100’s of cassette tapes in.

scarletheels's avatar

Um, no, I do not get mad at people who buy CDs, records, etc. Personally, I haven’t bought a CD in ages but to each his or her own.

I can get CD’s everywhere in my little town, and an even bigger variety up on Montréal. But for some stupid reason…I can’t find any fucking CD players ANYbloody where. And I need a new one too, because mine is really showing its age. I don’t want to listen to my stuff on my PC, PS3 or DVD player…just in a good ol fashioned CD player, but that seems impossible as of now. :/

And people can buy whatever the fuck they want, why would I get mad? People who think that people buying CD players or vinyls drag down society are pretty shallow themselves, I’d say. Preserve the art, preserve the history, or just have fun, man.

I’d still listen to my walkman today, if mine wasn’t all dead and more were still around.

By the way, I have nothing against ipods and all. It’s all awesome. Music is the heart man, the rest is just an artery.

@Symbeline, have you tried online? Ebay perhaps?

downtide's avatar

There are plenty of places here to buy CDs and CD players. I think people shold be allowed to buy what they want and I will continue to buy CDs until they’re no longer made.

Berserker's avatar

@Bellatrix Hey, good idea lol.

woodcutter's avatar

CD’s are a great system, one of mankind’s best efforts. I wish they would leave well enough alone.

flo's avatar

Thanks @all
@Bellatrix I think there was talk of Blockbusters going bankrupt, restructuring…last year anyway.
I have heard it said that the sound from an analogue recording is better than the sound from a digital recording me too, I think that is why there is so much vinyl available now.

@woodcutterI see the disc man type…” maybe you can tell @SymbelineBut for some stupid reason…I can’t find any fucking CD players ANYbloody where”

Re. Amazon etc. Here There is something to be said for walking in a store and knowing exactly what you are getting.

woodcutter's avatar

@flo The last time I looked ,Walmart didn’t carry component CD players. They have DVD players but not the dedicated music players. I wish they did, since the technology is “old” and proven I think they would be relatively inexpensive there. I would really like just a basic player, one disc at a time, no shuffle or any of that stuff just push play and listen. Back in my day records were meant to heard in order not skip around and that’s how I like to listen. Imagine if “Dark side of the Moon” was played on shuffle…that would be wrong…just wrong.

downtide's avatar

I think Blockbusters are gone from the UK, at least they’re gone from my town. I think it’s competiton from Amazon that’s killed them though.

The big box stores carry CD’s, but their selection isn’t always great. They only sell albums that came out 30 years ago or yesterday, with nothing in between.
