How do I go about finding a company in other countries to manufacturer items with my logo? (import/export business)

Asked by robdamel (791points) July 23rd, 2011

I’ve been exploring ideas and would like to understand a process better – Say I would like a certain item, say wallets, to be created in another country with my business logo, or brand name logo, on them, and import them to be sold under my brandname- What is the process for this to be done?

I`m guessing the first step is to find a manufacturer of leather products in another country. How would I do this for countries like Indonesia and China?

Basically, I’d just like to know the process one needs to do in order to have their products made in another country and imported-

Thanks

If you want a middleman to handle things for you, it would be different than if you want to go directly to the factory yourself. A middleman might save you from having to find a manufacturer yourself, but you will be giving some profit to them. Did you google import/export business? Another idea: google manufacturing China and put in what you want, and see what comes up. I’m sure there are people there that speak English, and they all have internet and email.

You might wish to look up the the US Trade Dept website and also the respective local chambers of commerce for each country or import-export agency if only for initial research and to get a lay of the land. Googling for a manufacturer could work but pretty much anybody could claim to be so-and-so on the web – it might be useful to check whom else they’ve done business with

Will this be your own design? Or are you planing to use something that already exists and you just want your logo on it?

Do you care about the design being ripped off?

If you expect to keep your design original, sending it to China is a bad idea. In my previous company every product we sent there was ripped off and counterfeited within months – including the tooling! Some of the fake parts even had the same cavity mold numbers. If they like your product, they suck you in by low balling the quote, with government support, and then produce units for sale everywhere but your planned outlets.
