General Question

Why could I be making these errors while typing?

Asked by kingpinlovesyou (312points) July 23rd, 2011

I’ll write a sentence and often write one word that looks like another word E.G. will, with, when, what – then, them – missleading, missing.

I’ve done it for years and was just hoping you guys could help me out.

I’ve noticed that if I write one word particularly often, I’ll write it accidentally when I’m meaning to write a word that starts the same way. I’ll start automatically typing the whole word when I type the first few letters.

The brain works in chunks.

@Mariah
So it’s not just me? I’ve been noticing a lot more recently but maybe that’s because I’ve been quickly trying to write stuff down.

Nah, I think that’s pretty common. I know I do it (sometimes).

@kingpinlovesyou I’m with @Mariah here. It’s not just you. I think what you’re talking about is very common. Not everything is a pathology.

When you read, you don’t read a word letter by letter. You read it by the general shape and maybe the first and last letters, and fill in the rest by context. That’s why easily confused words also look similar as well as sounding similar.

I have trouble finding words and then replace words with words that don’t mean anything when I’m talking. It takes me a long time to write answers on here but it’s also the same if I’m talking in person, many people say I take forever to tell my stories and it can bother some people. Things are scattered and then sometimes things are just plain blank. But they tell me this is due to a head injury I had when I was younger.
If you get this kind of stuff maybe get it checked.
