Do slogans on signboards bring people into church?

Asked by Jeruba (55824points) July 23rd, 2011

Piggybacking on this question about slogans posted on church signs:

Churchgoers, how do you feel about attending a church that promotes itself like cars or pizza? and do you think this style of advertising actually brings people into a house of worship?

Nonchurchgoers or occasional attenders, do these slogans make you feel like showing up on Sunday morning?

I did actually go into a service once based on an amusing slogan on a reader board. I’m not Christian, but I wanted to see if the service would reflect the light-hearted joy of the slogan. Damn, I can’t for the life of me remember what it said! The service, sermon, and congregation in general really fostered that feeling, it was a lovely experience of joyful worship. Although the slogan may have seemed a bit irreverent, the feeling inside was not. If I was of a Christian mind I would have regularly attended that church.

Not really, no. I’m at a point in my life right now where being in a church, even for an event such as a wedding or funeral, just makes me incredibly uncomfortable. Even in the past, as an atheist, I enjoyed attending church just for the all around good feelings and sense of community. That is just not where I am right now. I love reading the slogans, though. I have seen some that I felt were absolutely inspirational, plenty that were funny enough to make me chuckle, and even one that offended me. I am not swayed to actually enter, though.

I know people who have suffered a tragedy, or just broken up, or some kind of hurt, who were very eager for answers in their time of sorrow. The right billboard in the right spot at the right time for the right person can provide hope for some who desperately seek it at that moment.

The messages are great for a laugh, but they do not lure me enough to attend one of their services. When I attend a religious service, no matter what faith, it is for the educational aspect.

They do not inspire me to attend service. I do appreciate that the church can have a sense of fun instead of being so stodgy, though.

The sayings are clever I must admit. But that’s as far as it influences me, at all.
A looong time ago one of my dirt bike buddies invited me and wifey to attend his church one Wednesday evening. It was my first and last time in a service because it bothered me so. The fire and brimstone old school preaching. That was when I got a taste of the Pentecostal Church of Christ. The ambiance of no a/c added to the evil and hell that was enveloping me (according to them) ruined any chance of trusting anyone ever ,and I was pretty pissed off at my buddy for that.
I fuckin swear if civilization goes tits up and I can get a can of gasoline I’m going to burn a few churches, just for good measure. Don’t be inside one when I go-a-ragin.
did i just say that out loud?

Most church ’‘slogans’’ I’ve seen were nothing but mass attendance times. I’ve seen funny shit on the net, but never really anything in real life. But if I did, it wouldn’t make me go. If it did make me go, I’d probably also buy everything that commercials on TV tell me I can’t live without.

And Jesus said, bring me that ass!

I am an atheist, but also attend the occasional church service (for reasons other than a belief in the religion). However, these are almost exclusively Catholic/Orthodox/Anglican services, because I prefer that style. While I do laugh often at these signs, they end up highlighting for me what I don’t like about more Protestant churches (the informality, to put it shortly), so it makes it even less likely that I would ever go there.

I’ve never wanted to attend a church because of their sign messages. Around here, the ones I see most often actively make me want to avoid those churches!

I did see a funny ‘sign’ at a church recently, though. It was posted along the fire-lane, right in front of the church: Thou shalt not park

As I Christian, I don’t see the signs outside of churches as a form of advertisement. They are they just to get people to think! Many of them are witty and funny, but most have a double entendre that makes people genuinely think about the issue the sign is describing. While it may not bring people into the church exactly, I feel they help people refine their moral ideas and philosophy.

@Aethelflaed I like that there is another atheist on Fluther that likes to go to church, occasionally. I wonder if there are more. I’m inspired to ask a question.

I think it’s great that atheists sometimes go to church as well. I often find myself frequenting Atheist meetings!

No their feet do.
I don’t frequent religious establishments, a few words scrolled on a sign isn’t going to impact on that habit.
