Have CD's become the new 8 Tracks?

Asked by filmfann (52219points) July 27th, 2011

Ford Motor Company has announced that it will not put CD players in some of their new models. Instead, they will put a USB port so you can connect your iPod to your auto’s sound system.
You can read about it here
So, are the days of the CD player numbered? Do you listen to CD’s in your car? Do you listen to your iPod? Do you even know what an 8 track is?

I still have a few 8 tracks (no player), so bite me old man. :)

I haven’t heard of 8 tracks in cars. Ford has been fitting cassette players and CD players in its cars for years and they have been putting a jack point for iplayers in the glove compartments of certain models in the UK for at least 4 years. I hadn’t heard of USB connections but looking at the latest Ford brochures I see they are now available. I don’t think CDs will last much longer, in or out of cars.

I moved in September of 2010. The box that has my 500+ CD’s has not been unboxed since then. Now it all sits in iTunes and I get music digitally while Mother Earth rejoices.

When I have a long drive, I keep a box of about 15 CDs behind me, so I can play music I like, rather than face long stretches of California roads with only Country and Western, and Spanish Language music.
I suppose I could have also asked if anyone actually listens to their 8 tracks. Last person I know who did that was the Dude.

Yes. I only buy CDs (blank ones) so that I can make them for listening to in my car. I don’t buy CDs from artists anymore. I’m excited for the demise of the CD.

I wonder where my big box of vinyl LPs fits in this discussion?

@wilma Hey, how about the old crank up players?

@wilma The needle would skip on the record whenever I drove over a bump.

I know what an 8-track player is.

I do not own an IPod.

Leave the CDs alone in vehicles for traveling. It’s good, cheap entertainment.

I always hated CDs and will be glad to see them go. I never understood why we did not put them in a protective case like we did with floppy disks, had they done that I would perhaps of liked them more.

But yea, I carry a little netbook now for all my music needs, 400gb of storage, possibility of connecting two external 3TB drives if needed.

I recently ripped all my CD’s to my pc and then took them to Goodwill (about 350 CD’s). I hadn’t touched them in years, so didn’t make sense to keep them. Once I get a car with mp3, I will have no need for CD’s.

I dunno, I work at a record store, and we sell an awful lot of cd’s- however I guess if everyone rips them onto their computers- and transfers them to an ipod/iphone etc…...

I use my ipod, and also cd’s in my vehicle, however I also sometimes listen to cassettes haha. Theyre only 25 cents at my job-just last week I got on e with a bunch of old school hiphop : NWA, public enemy etcetc haha,
