Anyone know anything about health insurance for a pregnant woman?

Asked by tan235 (877points) July 27th, 2011

so .. here I go again, sorry guys another question.

My issue.
I’m a New Zealander on an O1 visa living in NY. (musician visa)
I Recently found out I’m pregnant and now I need health insurance as I plan to stay in NY for the duration.
Does anyone know if I“m eligible for health insurance or if I will need to go through New Zealand and get Travel insurance?
I know it’s a hard question, but would love to hear if anyone knows what I should do in this situation, I’ve been phoning and looking on line but no one seems to know.
Thanks Guys.

My experience, more than 40 years ago but the regulations haven’t changed. You have to have an insurance in place BEFORE you get pregnant, I carried a personal health insurance plan when my wife changed jobs ( no insurance at new job and I was student finishing up school) she got pregnant and I graduated and got a job that had the same insurance company. No problem —- covered!

NY has a program called Healthy NY. You could look into that. It has income limits so it might not work.

Being pregnant is a pre-existing condition, something they can deny paying up for so getting insurance would be moot. You’d be a guaranteed loss to them, so there’s no reason for them to accept you.

I think your best bet would be going through the social services department or finding out if your health coverage in NZ can be of any help out here.

Thanks guys after phoning about 10 different insurance companies this was made very clear, I almost feel like I shouldn’t tell them I’m pregnant.
hmmm ok well I might go just get some money out of my invisible vault that is flying in the air.

@tan235 I almost feel like I shouldn’t tell them I’m pregnant That would be insurance fraud, and they have departments that deal with just that.

Insurance in this country is not the same as it is in others. Pregnancy is a “pre-existing” condition. @sinscriven was correct above, they can and as you have found, will deny you based on that condition alone.

Is there any way you can contact your insurance company and find out if they can offer assistance here in the States?

hey @Spatzielover I actually don’t have insurance though at all, not even in New Zealand, however I should phone the consulate and ask them again…. Thanks for your advice everyone, and for the record I know it’s fraud it was said in jest – and frustration!

@tan235 I understood it was in jest…just wanted to give you the FYI anyway. I thought you had NZ insurance. Definitely make the phone call.

Call your local Medicaid office. If you meet the salary guidelines, you can get free health insurance for you and your baby.
