It depends, but generally I prefer to call it quits after about an hour.

You have to decide for yourself, or your parents will.

The longest ever ever I spent on the phone with a girlfriend was two hours. That was pre-internet, pre-cellphones. And that was not at all unusual amongst my friends. But the rare three hours was always baffling to me and a lot of my contemporaries.

My ears start to hurt after 3 hours and that’s after switching the phone from one ear to another.

@zenvelo Gosh, Vanessa and I talk four or five hours sometimes. I’m with my fella now so we don’t have those three-hour phone chats anymore.

@tranquilsea You must be on a cell. I hate talking on cell phones. I like my landline; will never get rid of it.

@perspicacious I can’t talk on a cell phone for any longer than 5 minutes. I hate how they heat up. That’s with my portable phone.

Between my ex husband and I, we once talked to his parents for about 12 hours. There was this special deal where we could phone the UK for a dollar or something over one 24 hour period. We couldn’t phone them often because it was when international calls were so, so expensive. So we just talked and talked. I can’t imagine what we talked about for so long now!

I am not advocating this by the way.

When you’re over 45 YO: 10 minutes
When you’re 23–44 YO: 30 minutes to an hour
When you’re 12–22 YO: What do you mean too long to spend on the phone????

Sheesh@sarahhhh .. 10 minutes? 10!! Far out .. bit tough that.

@Bellatrix I’m judging by my mom and dad… maybe that should have been over 45. They will sometimes not even answer the phone when it’s ringing. Or spend 3–4 minutes staring at the number on the caller ID screen trying to figure out who’s calling.

When you don’t know how long you’ve been talking and don’t know what time it is.

@sarahhhhh lolol that is funny. Poor parents.

Ya I also don’t think there are “too long” time periods for speaking on the phone, unless I’m speaking to my mother. Then I try to keep it in the 15–20 minute range or lower!

5 minutes. I hate talking on the phone.
When I’m giddy in love, then there is definitely no time limit.

When my ear starts to hurt.

The longest I’ve ever sent on a telephone call was 12 hours. Both ears were quite sensitive by the end of that one.

I’ve never really enjoyed talking on the phone and always resort to communicating with people online, however, there are a few (very few) people I can chit-chat with endlessly. @lucillelucillelucille is one of them. We talk on the phone for no less than an hour a day. Sometimes two and once in a blue moon we push it to three or four.

To answer the question, I guess it’s when leisurely talking on the phone begins to interfere with important tasks and errands you should be achieving throughout your daily or weekly routine. It’s not difficult to get carried away. I have plenty of times. You have to monitor yourself. But if not, I don’t see much wrong with it. It is a form of human contact and I happen to value it, especially when a good friend of mine, like Lucille or @perspicacious lives out of state and I want to hear their beautiful voices! :D
