Why do they even bother trying to make band aids "skin colored"?

Asked by redfeather (6507points) July 29th, 2011 from iPhone

My mom has a bandaid on her chin from a shot and I saw her rifling through bandaid boxes in our first aid kit. I asked what she was doing and she said “Looking for a Latina colored one.” which got me to thinking. Do they even have different colored bandages? Like, for dark brown people, or pink people, or olive people? Why are all bandages the color of orthopedic granny shoes?

I’ve seen them. They have clear ones too. I personally prefer Ninja-Turtles band-aids though.

Yes, they do. They also have clear bandages.

Ebon-Aide!

Johnson & Johnson Band aids have been in business for a long time (1920), and the majority has still been white people lol.

redfeather's avatar

@Blackberry because white people get hurt more. Probably.

I’ve never seen different colored band aids. Never. I’ve seen clear. But who the hell is clear? Psh.

Blackberry's avatar

@redfeather No, I just mean that when they were making the band aids, or the notion of flesh colored band aids came about, they probably weren’t thinking about every single shade of flesh, just the most prevalent ones.

Plucky's avatar

@Blackberry or they just didn’t care, lol. Fools…don’t they know we like cartoons on our bandaids?!

redfeather's avatar

@Blackberry, Blackberry, Blackberry… I was making a joke, dearest. I knew what you meant.

Plucky's avatar

Lol a friend of mine has the bacon ones on this page. I want the Crime Scene ones ...Ooo and the duct tape ones!

Blackberry's avatar

@redfeather Oops lol.

@Plucky They started making cartoon band aids in 1951, so apparently cartoons are more important than catering to other races…...lol. Ok I was joking then, too.

They even have them for Smurfs!

They use blue band-aids in food service. If it falls off into food, it’s easy to spot.

Omg Mac & Cheese!

Ok, you have to look at these ones .. just scroll over the little squares under the information/title and it will show you pictures of the different types, lol.

I’m so glad that you asked this question, as it has annoyed me for years. I just checked the Band-Aid brand site, and if they are now offering them in various skin-tone shades, I don’t see them listed. An internet search found this site, but it looks like it is more of a humorous poke at the industry than a real site. Seriously though…it is long overdue.

@Seelix Er…thanks for the heads up.

Another bit of interesting trivia. In England, they do not call them by the brand name, but use the term ‘plaster’, as in, “Mom! I scraped my knee and need a plaster!”

The Caucasian ones don’t really match any Caucasian people’s skin tone really anyway.

Ebon-Aide. Really?

Aethelflaed's avatar

@redfeather I like the one called “cinnamon”, because it doesn’t at all resemble a cinnamony color.

J and J grosses about $64 billion a year. That’s why.

Would it really matter. You will always notice a band aid on someones face and no matter how hard you try to stare your eyes will always shift to band aid. Thats why I rather just live the scab alone and let it heal without the band aid. It will heal faster anyway, unless its a deep cut or you simply need the band aid to help it stop bleeding down your face.
I’ve seen some darker band aids and colorful ones for kids and so called skin colored, but I’ve never seen anything darker than a slightly tan band aid.

incendiary_dan's avatar

I prefer pirate bandages myself.

FluffyChicken's avatar

Band-aids on the face are sexy.

Proof
