Do you color your hair?

Asked by josie (30934points) July 29th, 2011

A couple of weeks ago I got a haircut.
I started looking at the clippings on the plastic and stifling hot drape that “Ashley” wrapped around my neck. There was a couple of gray hairs.
I knew this day was coming.
Now, I doubt that I will ever color over my gray hair.
But I am curious.
Do you color your hair?
Male or female?
While we are here-Is it grey or gray?

No I do not. A few years ago I had long hair. [around 40 cm long]
After a while when I cut the hair I said I’d either color it or shave. Been a few years since I shave every day. I find it much better.

For the purposes here, I think “gray” is more appropriate. My hair is graying, but it grows so fast that if I colored it I would be touching up roots all the time. I just wear really loud pants to detract from the gray-itude of my hair.

The last time I colored my hair was 20 years ago. I’m 40 now. My blond hair gets a little darker in the winter, but once summer comes around and I’m outside more and swimming my hair really lightens up quite a bit.

My plan is to keep it natural like Jane Goodall has done. I haven’t found a gray hair yet though.

I dye my hair with henna. It is not yet grey. I don’t feel like myself unless I’m red.

Oh, @jonsblond , Jane Goodall is one of my favorite people on the planet!

It is grey or gray. Grey is the British spelling. Gray is the US spelling.

I have foils. My hair is a light brown and I have some dark and light foils put through it. Not so much to cover any grey as I don’t have many, but more just to give my hair a bit of a lift.

If you do decide to do it. Don’t go for a blanket colour. You need to make sure you have highlights to make it look natural. I do think men can wear grey much more effectively than women. Look at George Clooney. He looks hot! I am sure “Ashley” can help you find the right colour solution if necessary though.

As my daughter says about my head, “What hair?”

@hawaii_jake : When I had chemo and radiation I didn’t lose my hair. Everyone told me I was lucky. Yeah. They didn’t have to deal with it. I’m still considering adopting your look!

(Female) I used to dabble in different colors of hair, including highlights, but it had nothing to do with going gray. That that those pesky strands are starting to make an appearance, they are just embraced for what they are. Coloring is just too high maintenance for me. I’d rather spend the money on something else.

As for ‘gray’ or ‘grey’, there is no real difference. ‘Grey’ came first, and the US version is ‘gray’. Neither one is wrong. What is wrong is that gray hair is not ‘gray’. It is colorless (or what some may refer to as white). What happens is that they reflect the colors of the hair surrounding it. Thus, people with naturally dark hair that isn’t colored take on that salt and pepper look, and it is much less noticeable in natural blonds.

No, I do not. I’ve never wanted to be not blond at this age, but maybe if I start graying, I will.

And as for the difference between “gray” and “grey”—Gray is a color. Grey is a colour. Problem solved :)

Yes. I have for more than 20 years. And I am now on track to transition away from coloring.

When my hair began to show a serious amount of gray, I started coloring it dark blonde/light brown to retain its own color. For a while I had a weave done, and then I just had it colored overall—except for the very front. I preserved the white streak that’s been there since I was 22, right in front.

Over the years the white streak has widened and I have left it natural while coloring the rest.

Two years ago, when I retired and started letting my little professional haircut grow out, I also started letting the white streak widen. It’s pretty broad now. At the end of this year I am planning to have all the rest turn white. And then I’ll stop coloring.

Of course, if I don’t like that, I can always go back to the color that my hairdresser is putting in now, and the white hair will just be a 6-week anomaly.

No, it colors itself.

My hair has been going gray since my mid-20s. At that time it was a good thing, because I finally could walk into bars unchallenged. (I used to get haircuts then and joke with the stylist to “just cut off the gray”.)

It’s nearly all white now. People have told me (until I sort of growl at them to back off with that “compliment”) that I look very “senatorial”.

I do.
My hair is naturally brown.
I color it brown.XD
I do however, love grey or silver hair and when I get enough of it,I will let it stay that way.

redfeather's avatar

I do, but I don’t do it to hide anything. I do it so I don’t look like a soccer mom. Right after my daughter was born I got purple highlights. Now I have bright blonde highlights mixed in with old coppery red ones and my dark brown hair

Nope…my hair gets bleached by t5he sun in summer…and I now have grey in my facial hair….I just take what ever colors I was born with!

wilma's avatar

No I don’t color it, I never have.
My hair has been all white since my early thirties.

MRSHINYSHOES's avatar

No I don’t. My hair is currently jet black, with a very slight “bluish tinge” (as you can see in my avatar if you click on it). My paternal grandmother greyed quite early, but she lived to 96, so was grey-haired half her life. I guess when I start greying, I will dye it, probably with Just For Men or some hair color like that for men.

I’m a female and I do. When I was a teen and through my late 20’s I did off and on. I have been blond, all shades of brown, red, you name it. In my early 30’s I went all natural, I figured it was my last chance to not have to fuss with it, because I knew I would cover my grey once they start coming in. I had a good run, maybe 7 years or so. Very late 30’s until about a year ago, I am 43, I colored it myself with temporary, and when the color faded my natural still looked brunette, unless you were very close to me and saw the 8 or 10 greys. Now officially, I have decided I am too grey to not keep up with it, I still only have about 20 grey hairs, but it is enough. My husband always tells me when he sees them. Thanks honey LOL. Just this last visit to the hair dresser, I figured go for a change and I went blonder again.

I think my husband will probably dye his hair for a while when he start to go grey. Not sure, we’ll see. He still has gorgeous wavy/curly black hair. <Sigh> So unfair.

Nope and I never will.

Male, 39, lots of grey.

I colour my hair and I’ve been doing so since middle school (I’m 19 now). I started dyeing my hair because I was a bratty pre-teen, but I do it now because I’m a bratty teenager I just like experimenting with different colours. I’m not fond of my natural hair colour, and it doesn’t even match my eyebrows so I think I’m almost justified in disliking it. I typically use natural colours like brown or red, but I’m thinking about doing more eccentric colours soon because I want to get it all out of my system.
I don’t think I would dye my hair in the future to cover greys – or at least not for the sole purpose of covering grey.

Nonamechick's avatar

When i go gray I’m going to rock it. End of story. I use to dye my hair but recently stopped cause it damaged my hair to much.

downtide's avatar

I used to dye my hair when it was long. I love red hair (on myself or anyone else) and would usually be red. Now I keep my hair very short there’s no point: if I dye it the colour would be gone in a month.

I have a sprinkling of grey but no gray. :P

ucme's avatar

Nah, mines shaved to within an inch of it’s life.
When I was a teenager I dyed my hair blonde & had it permed…yes that’s right, I looked like Harpo Marx!!

Neizvestnaya's avatar

I’m female and I don’t presently color my hair because my job expects me to look natural and polished rather than trendy. Just a few gray hairs now and then but not enough to warrant me coloring yet. I can’t tell if I’ll have them in a pattern or not but if that happens then I will color.

My fiancee is young but is mostly gray and now and then we color his hair for fun, he doesn’t feel strange about it because he’s thrilled to just have hair.
