How terrific (and smart) is Katy Perry for having Kenny G perform the sax solo on her new(ish) song Last Friday Night?

Asked by _zen_ (7857points) August 1st, 2011

I like it when the new generation pays reverance, and utilizes (sorry for the mechanical term) the talents of the older generation.

Have you seen other good examples?

Secondly, it’s an amazing 8 minute video clip. Video has indeed killed the radio star. I bet it cost as much as Thriller to make.

She should let him do the whole thing and just not bother appearing in the song at all.

@downtide So you like her?

She was great, I really like Katie Perry. Kenny G was as bad as he ever is. Seriously, his only talent on the sax is making it squeal like a pig being slaughtered.

Don’t even get me started on his hair.

Kenny G… he (to me) sounds like he just makes variations of the same tune over and over and over… don’t get me wrong, I listen to his stuff when I wanna relax but just a little bit.

As a former saxophonist, I truly believe that the Soprano sax is not a musical instrument, but an instrument of torture.

The Soprano Sax is to Kenny G like giant human skewering pikes are to Vlad the Impaler.

I like when new musicians pay tribute to older musicians, especially when the older musician’s talent is unfortunately relatively unknown/disgregarded by the newer generation.
However, I must say that the last word I would ever use to describe Katy Perry or anything within a 10 foot radius around her is ‘terrific’.

Jenny Lewis, Zooey Deschanel, and M. Ward did a cover of ‘Carpetbaggers’ by Elvis Costello with Elvis Costello once. I have yet to see a really good video of it (it was at a festival) but I imagine that being there to see it happen must have been some experience.
Also Conor Oberst features Emmylou Harris on quite a few of his songs on the Bright Eyes album I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning.

^ That’s what I was talking about. Of course, to each his own with regards to musical taste etcetera.

Like Ronan Keating doing Cat Stevens’ Father and Son with Cat Stevens…
