Question about the movie Babette's Feast?

Asked by AshlynM (10684points) August 3rd, 2011

Does anyone know what type of meal they were making with the fish? When Babette first arrives, the sisters are showing her how to make something involving fish, water, ale and hard bread. The fish is soaked then everything is cooked for an hour.

Would anyone have any idea what this recipe is?

I can remember the whole thing. I can see it plainly in my mind, but for the life of me, I can’t remember what that stuff was called.

It looked awful. Do you want to make some?

Here you go:

Ol-brot [ale bread soup]

Take dried cod and stale rye bread, break both of them into pieces. Put the cod into warm water a few hours before preparing the soup to rehydrate. When it is time to make the soup, press the excess water out of the dried fish, and add the fish and bread to a pot with enough ale to cover. Simmer until the bread dissolves and the fish is rehydrated and cooked through.

(ripped off from here)

Bon appetit!
