What is the value of my computer?

Asked by jm5225 (253points) August 3rd, 2011

I need to sell my imac because of the credit card interest :( Unfortunately I messed up and didn’t pay it off in time and the interest killed me. No matter what I’m losing big time here but I just want to get rid of the debt and be done with it.

I was wondering what is the fair value or what can I ask for when selling it. I spent 1200 on and I know Ill be lucky to get at least 700 now.

2.4 GHz intel core 2 duo processor
3GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Snow Leopard 10.6
No damages of course. The mouse scroll ball probably needs replacement if anything.
500GB hard drive

I don’t know whatever specs matter…oh it’s the 21” screen I think is the size.

What would be the best way to recoup the debt for this computer/how much can I sell it for?

I would guess about $600. The trick is finding a buyer.
Selling a computer is tricky, though. Make sure you have all your personal information off of it.

It will vary by market (aka the city/area you live in). Your processor isn’t that good (not bad but avg at best in todays new computer market). Your RAM is a lot, but its older style RAM (which in the end doesn’t mean much but does mean something cost wise).

Go on craigslist and look at what computers are going for and pay attention to their specs.

You want $700, so go online and as for like $850 and see if you get any bites or offers (that will probably be less). Go from there.

I would be surprised if anyone would pay even $600 for a used laptop of any quality. Who buys a used laptop when new ones can be had so cheaply now?

Well its a desktop, and its a mac. Although it’s about 2 years old any of macs products are kinda pricey…although I havn’t reviewed some of the latest ones

Fix the scroll ball so someone doesn’t use that as a bargaining piece… That ball constantly has issues.

Just take a qtip with a little rubbing alcohol and rub that all over the scroll ball. Then rub the ball vigorously. It will get the crud loose (the crud that is pulled down into the components by the ball), and they will come up. Wipe off, let dry, and voila. Works like new. At least for now.

Also, be happy you got a Mac, they hold their value ALOT better than PC’s do.

Good luck!
