What things do you forget?

Asked by flutherother (34525points) August 4th, 2011

Memory can be fickle. What things do you have trouble remembering is it names, appointments, dates or things you are told? Do you worry if you forget something and what do you do if you have an absent minded moment?

I never lose stuff, but that’s because I’m well organized. I forget just about everything else, though. People, places I’ve been, things I’ve done, you name it. I have a terrible memory.

I have a good memory. I don’t have a problem remembering dates, places, people etc.
Though, I always seem to forget mum told me to clean my room before going out…

To get the coffee maker ready the night before. It’s a revolting situation first thing in the morning.

Where the eff I took my shoes off. especially in summer

Where I put my wallet, sunglasses and car keys. I lose one of them at least once a month.

woodcutter's avatar

@Jude Once a month? You’re doing pretty good.

Jude's avatar

@woodcutter it’s a bitch to replace them, though.

@Jude I’ll come over and install some 3M hooks for you like I did for my mom. The last time she lost her keys, I got huffy with her, installed a hook and said “Put them here every day and you’ll never lose them again.” She hasn’t lost them again…now what to do about her cell? ;)

I always forget items to buy at the store. I also forget things that my boss tells me to do.

I can go to the supermarket for tobacco, because it is almost finished, and come back with yoghurt.

I forget things I’ve been told by my teachers sometimes. I forgot a lot of homework in the middle of the last year. I’m going to be a freshman in high school this year so I’m going to try harder to remember though.

I’ll have to check my list…

I have a very good memory for most things. The only time I have problems with my memory is when I am really busy. So I might have completed a task, filed it away mentally and then forget I did it. I think that probably relates to working mechanically on some things.

I also forget people’s faces. I don’t code faces properly. I seem to have a mild form of what is called “face blindness” or Prosopamnesia. Link
In some cases, don’t recognise people I have met before even a couple of times. I will pass them and not recognise them. Other times, and I suspect it is where the person has more distinctive features or in some way I connect more strongly with them, I do remember their faces. It can be very frustrating and a bit embarrassing at times, because people say hi to me and until they start talking to me I don’t remember them. Usually after a brief conversation, I do remember them (just not their face!).

Keys, phone, purse, those kind of things. If I go to the shop for something specific, I usually forget it and buy something random. I’m fairly good with faces for the most part but names can be challenging at times. When it comes to things like appointments and such commitments, I rarely, if ever forget.

@rebbel that sounds like a good problem to have.

I don’t remember…

Where I left my reading glasses. I now have 4 pair from Dollar Tree. I sometimes forget to put a pair in my purse, but I always know where I can find a pair: in the blue box, where I keep them all.

I have “why did I come into this room?” syndrome. I’ll know that I need something but cannot remember what it is. At home I can go back to the room I started in and that will jar my memory. At work it’s a pain in the neck because I usually have walked up or down a flight of stairs to get whatever it was I needed. It’s very frustrating. Or, I’ll go to the store with a list no less and forget something on the list.

On the other hand, I’m great with names, faces and events from the past. My husband has very little autobiographical memory and he is always amazed at the stuff I remember. Of course, I’m amazed that at the things he doesn’t.

I’m always forgetting what I went into a room for. I’m also a total slob, so I loose things quite regularly. I’m very good about my phone, wallet, and keys though. they are the three essential things I take with me everywhere.

@Jude Oh you mean you lose, lose them? Ouch. I was hoping it was just laid down somewhere in the house and you search all over the place and eventually find them. You and me together would be a train wreck but a funny one,OK maybe not funny.

I forget the names of people and concepts. I forget words. Several times a day, now. It has been rapidly growing worse. No one seems to think it is a problem.

I forget events. I forget movies and books. However if someone reminds me, it usually comes back quickly.

I do not forget how to do things. And because of that, I can usually recover what I have forgotten. Also because I keep collections and catalog it all.

I have a poor memory for people’s names. I never forget a face but I often have trouble remembering the name that goes with it. I usually know the name but just can’t bring it to mind when I need it. It can be embarrassing when I met someone unexpectedly and they know my name but I can’t remember theirs.

My memory for place names is fine and for things in general but people’s names just don’t stick with me.

I had a stunning memory before chemo, now my short term is wonky. I buy things twice, I arrange appointments twice, sometimes just thinking of something translates in my mind to having done it, my credit rating sucks because I’ve forgotten to pay stuff. The good news is, when I meet up with my other chemo-brain friends every joke is fresh and new even though we’ve told/heard them all before!

Setting the table, I frequently forget the plates. Since I was a teenager, I’ve forgotten the plates. Why the plates? I think maybe I resented my mother trying to civilize me. But then wouldn’t I forget the forks too? Makes no sense to me.
