How many different colors of red, green, blue and yellow do you know?

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) August 5th, 2011

Sometimes speaking with non-artistically inclined people it is had to point out a color. If some one ask where it the bank, and I say it is right over there where that Scarlet Lake pickup truck is, if there is more than one red truck in the parking lot, they draw a blank. Or if I say I like that year of Corvette, but I don’t like the color. That I think it would have been better Copenhagen Blue instead of the Sap Green, they can’t picture it. Do you know different colors of red, green blue, etc, or is it all the same to you?
Just to give you a hint you can have:

• Scarlet Red.
• Candy Apple Red.
• Cadmium Red.
• Poppy Red.

Like that, I am not giving you all of them. What can you add to that?

I know quite a few because I paint.I also make up names for some of my own combos.
“Dave’s Red Ass” for instance,is rarely used….just too vibrant for most applications.

My dad was an Artist. I was once an Art Major.
People call different shades by different names.
You start with the Primary Colors of Yellow, Red, and Blue. You mix them according to the shade you want. There is Sky Blue. Which is Blue and White mixed. There is Pink which is Red and White. There is Lime Green which is a lot of Yellow mixed with Blue. I could go on and on.
LOL I use to mix for my father when I was just a small child. It was fun and I learned.

There are so many but my favorite color was and is Matador Red…it was a Napa enamel paint I used to paint my first 1968 Camaro. It was bootiful!

Haha, @Hypocrisy_Central, this is actually an exercise I do when I’m having trouble falling asleep! I picture all the distinct shades of a color that I can imagine, and try to assign a name to each.

So off the top of my head, here are just a few:
Red (from purple zone to orange zone):
Magenta, Raspberry, Fire-engine red, Scarlet
Yellow (from orange zone to green zone):
Macaroni, Goldenrod, Highlighter yellow
Green (from yellow zone to blue zone):
Spring green, Lime green, Easter grass, Mint
Blue (from green zone to purple zone)
Aqua, Turquoise, Sky blue, Cerulean, Navy blue, Cornflower blue, Periwinkle, Indigo

There are so many more but my brain just isn’t coming up with them right now. I think I’m much better at this when I’m tired. XD

@Mariah
It has been a long time since I had my big box of crayons with all those names. The list is endless because different companies make up different names for similar colors.

I am a needle worker, so I know hundreds. Every color you see on the chart has a different name (some add light or dark in front of the primary color, and that can go up to very in front, as well)

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

@Mariah Awww….. You forgot to mention Hunters green, Grass green, Kelly green, Marine green, and Chartreuse… ;-P

Mariah's avatar

@Hypocrisy_Central Dang, I sure did! Chartreuse is one of my favorite shades of green, too!

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

@Mariah Was Mediterranean Blue, Non-Photo Blue, Caribbean Blue, True Blue, or Peacock Blue, a favorite you missed?

Okay now you’re just making fun of me. :P

I am color blind in the gren/blue/brown part of the spectrum. I screwed up our bathroom remodeling project twice because I couldn’t tell the difference between the blue and teal. I get a headache when I think about colors so this is where I will stop answering this question.

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

@Ron_C Teal to many people get confused with Aqua, though to me Teal is more deep and gree than Aqua which people also mixes up with Sea Green. Very slight differences can throw people off. Many would not be able to tell the difference between Raw Umber and Sepia.

@Mariah Ok, maybe I was funning you a lottle. Forgive me? :-)

@Hypocrisy_Central Oh God! You’re killing me! Those colors are just names to me and it really hurts to think about telling them apart. I think I have color-phobia (or however you say color in Latin)
