You could tell iTunes on the pc to only sync contacts, and iTunes on the mac to only sync music – but I wonder if the pc will then erase the iPhone’s music and the mac will erase the iPhone’s contacts.

Why not make life easy and move your contacts to the mac address book?

I have read on the Apple Discussions pages that it is possible to do so as described in the first response. I suggest that you look there for further details… I am on my iPhone now, so I can’t add a link, but go to Apple.com > iPhone > Support > Discussions.

I have an iPhone and use both my Macbook and Windows machine to sync music onto my iPhone. When you use a different machine than the one you last synced with all of the music will be replaces with the music on the current machine you are using. However, you will not lose your contacts or any other data on your iPhone.
