Do the extremely violent and sexual controversial films have an effect on an adult's psyche?

Asked by Blackberry (33949points) August 9th, 2011

Reading about some of the movies in this thread made me think. Why am I afraid to watch these movies? I know I could handle watching them, but why won’t I watch them?

Is it possible for a person to watch a really disturbing scene and be affected in a detrimental way?

I hated KillBill 1 and 2 because the senseless mindless violence and extreme blood spurting from death blows via sword play was heinous at best.

You probably won’t be affected in a detrimental way, but you may be disturbed enough to upset your sleep and dreams or your appetite (if you are eating while watching..

It really depends. Irreversible was a disturbing movie to watch but I wanted to see what all the fuss is about and realized that it wasn’t a big deal. Then again, you put those animal commercials on my tv and I’m crying for an hour, feeling really emotional.

I just realized…I haven’t seen a fucked up movie since May. I’m going to watch Nekromantik again when I get back from class
To answer your question, not that I’m aware of.

I wouldn’t think so but then again I may just be experiencing boiled frog syndrome here.

Marian Woodman believes that we are (our unconscious) the sum of the images that we take in.

I find this to be true.

They do bother me. In my day it was all the “Friday the 13th” flicks I couldn’t take. Now we have “Final Destination 5”? I never went to 1 – 4 or will see 6 -.... I don’t like being startled especially in an upsetting way like that. It bugs me.

If I stay up alone at night & watch a particularly gruesome movie, I suffer when I go to bed.
That’s only because I wake the wife with my pathetic girly sobbing, a swift knee to the nuts soon regains my focus though.

Once you get past the violence and controversy, they are not real, after all. There is more real violence and real controversy that might affect you, however. Just watch the local news.

Yes it can. We are not aware everything going in our subconscious.

@Blackberry, that is really sweet you won’t watch them. For me, I feel they wouldn’t have permanent negative consequences but temporary ones. And why the heck do I need that? For kids, I’m more concerned.

There was one particular scene in Kill Bill 2 (or 3?) that literally gave me nightmares for weeks, and I won’t describe what scene it was because then I’ll have to think about it and I’ll have nightmares again. Permanent damege thoigh? No I don’t think so. Ask me in forty years if the thought of that scene still gives me nightmares.

I think there are some adults who, because they’re immature of mind, are affected by these movies and are influenced by them. I don’t mean the middle-aged or elderly set, but young men and women between the ages of 18 and 30. They become dull to the violence, the foolishness, and the stupidity, so they act the same way in real life.

If they did, I’d be a either a violent, murderer or a paranoid shut-in, scared of everyone and everything. I’m neither of those things. I just like a good movie.

woodcutter's avatar

@MRSHINYSHOES I sure hope you are wrong about that.

@woodcutter When I see those “adult” guys on “Wildboyz” do stupid, moronic acts and then one of the guys from that movie go out and gets himself almost killed doing a similar trick on his motorbike, um no.

Maybe dumb kids just grow up to be dumb adults who like dumb movies.
