My normally straight hair is curly since I cut it. Anyone else have this happen?

Asked by Seelix (14952points) August 9th, 2011

So I cut about 8–10 inches off my hair last week. Since I had it cut, it’s got a fabulous curl to it. I once cut my hair from a similar length about 15 years ago, and it didn’t curl like this.

I know it’s likely going to straighten out as my hair gets used to the new length, because hair’s curl is determined by the follicle shape, but I’m curious. Has anyone else had this happen? How long did the curl last?

I have a somewhat related experience. My hair is straight as a board until 5–6”. At that point it begins to curl on the ends. The further from the 6” mark, the heavier the curl. I hate it. It used to stay completely straight. I wish it was one way or the other.

Yes, I had a similar experience, although I’d call it wavy instead of curly. A couple of years ago, the long locks were cut off, and the hair stylist commented on the natural wave. I told her that it must be from the left over chemical highlights. She said that our body has subtle changes approximately every seven years, and it can impact our hair.

I don’t know if this is true or not, but thinking back over the years, there have been some bodily changes that would fit into that timeline.

That is normal. I’m assuming it has more to do with the weight of your hair. It may have a natural curl that did not show before because of the weight of your hair (being longer before). I’m sure I read somewhere that, as we age, our hair gets heavier/thicker; but that could be entirely wrong, I can’t remember.
I think what you use in your hair is also important. Perhaps you use different shampoos, conditioners and other products that you did not use 15 years ago (when you had last cut it that short).

Thanks for your answers, Jellies.

It’s just strange – my hair has always been poker straight and never even wanted to hold a curl before. Oh well, whatever the reason, I’ll just enjoy it however long it lasts :)

That’s funny because my curly hair becomes straight when I cut it!

My hair is really thick, so when it’s longer, it’s straighter. When I get the weight cut off, it is much wavier.

Yep. The longer my hair is, the straighter it is. I have pretty ringlets when it is shorter and lighter. My hair is baby fine (but very dense) and it takes very little to weigh it down. At the current length all I have to do is comb it a few times to get it poker straight, but my hair is naturally curly.

My hair was totally straight, not a kink in it, until I had my first child. Now it has a wave to it. I think it might be a hormonal thing. It has never become as straight as it was until my early 20s again.
