Bathtub Mats (inside tub): Do they prevent future lime/water stains? Details follow)

Asked by DarlingRhadamanthus (11273points) August 12th, 2011

A while back I posted that I was having a dither of a time getting lime stains out of an old tub. People gave me all sorts of suggestions (vinegar was one of them). None of them worked. In a last ditch attempt, I got something at the local shop that worked on limescale and it seemed to get all the hard water/lime stains off the bottom of the tub (I am still grappling with some leftover staining from the taps downward.)

I am looking at (finally!) a very white tub and thinking how I don’t want to ever (ever !) have to do this again. Limescale is a huge problem in this area. So, I am thinking of getting a bathtub mat to place alongside the bottom of the tub. There are some nice ones made that look like flat pebbles, for example.

My question: Will the mat help or hinder future staining? Will it trap scale underneath or will it prevent staining since it covers the bottom?

I’ve never used one…so if you have any experience using one….I would appreciate it. I just don’t want to have another mess on my hands later.

Thanks so much!

Most older tubs are porous and prone to staining because of this. The best thing is to get a tub sealant/paint like one that Rust-Oleum sells. The mat will not make a difference in staining.

@DarlingRhadamanthus I agree with @Tropical_Willie. Once you get the new tub, if you use a shower spray, or even watered down vinegar after every use, the lime should not build up on your new tub.

We have the same issues here with lime & iron. Every 6mos, I do a more detailed clean of the tub/tiles…but I have almost no need for chemicals and elbow grease due to our persistent use of a daily leave on.

The bathtub mat will not prevent the lime buildup.

No, the mat will not be helpful. The only way (going forward) to prevent soap scum and lime scale is to completely dry out the tub after using it. This works; I have been doing it for about ten years.

Great answers!

I think I will use a spray and dry it out as @SpatzieLover and @perspicacious suggested.

But I thank all of you. Lurve coming to all…!
