Do you think it would be fun to be President?

Asked by josie (30934points) August 15th, 2011

RUNNING for President would be a supreme pain in the ass, and I really would not have the patience for it.

But I think BEING President would be pretty cool. Making decisions every day, knowing that they will affect the course of history (taking comfort in knowing that history goes on and on anyway, so why not with your input), working under pressure, dealing with crisis, meeting world leaders, travelling first class everywhere, living in the White House etc, etc. All very stimulating stuff.

What do you think?

I think it would be incredibly boring, last thing I would ever want is a teleprompter to tell me what to say every damn day. And the endless meetings….ohhh wait!! I almost forgot about all the golf!! Never mind!

Berserker's avatar

If being president is anything like medieval England was, and how kings just basically took orders from councils and shit, I really wouldn’t wanna do it.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

I do.
Executive orders…Presidential bath towels with matching bathrobe
And most of all, making prank phone calls from that big red telephone.

FluffyChicken's avatar

No. Too much responsibility and research.

Berserker's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille Lol. Damn, you know how to live.

Vote @lucillelucillelucille for president!

@Symbeline Thank you, thank you very much!

Think of all the vacations you could take! George W. Bush had 69 days of vacation in his first year of his presidency.

Aethelflaed's avatar

Hell no. I’d imagine there’d be some totally cool parts, but for the most part, it’d just be 4–8 years of chronic trauma and stress.

SavoirFaire's avatar

No. It’s not a coincidence that presidents all leave looking 30 years older than when they arrived. Even George W. Bush, who was often accused of neglecting the job due to the number of vacation days he took, aged visibly. Like @Aethelflaed said, there would probably be fun moments; but I can’t see it as being fun overall.

Adagio's avatar

In short, no.

KhiaKarma's avatar

Couldn’t pay me enough to ever even consider it. I like working on the micro rather than macro level.

Aethelflaed's avatar

@KhiaKarma I like working on the micro rather than macro level. Me too. The letting go of little things, especially “my” issues that I had to sacrifice for bigger fish, would be excruciating.

FutureMemory's avatar

I couldn’t handle being under such severe scrutiny on a daily basis. Also the lack of privacy would be very difficult for me. I mean, can he even make love to his wife without the secret service being aware? Sheesh.

KhiaKarma's avatar

@Aethelflaed I currently work with individuals and families. Sometimes, even on the micro level, change is hard to measure and assessing from where the problems stem is a challenge. I can only imagine that in the big scheme of societal issues, especially in a political arena, the challenges would be even greater and more frustrating. However, if the answers were more clearly defined and positive change were achieved, it could also be extremely rewarding….

You will have a cabal of advisor’s to make your mind up for you all the time. I doubt that I could be any worse than the last couple. How hard can it be?

Joker94's avatar

Maybe for a little while, but the stress of it all would get to you eventually.

I follow General Sherman’s sentiment:

“I hereby state, and mean all that I say, that I never have been and never will be a candidate for President; that if nominated by either party, I should peremptorily decline; and even if unanimously elected I should decline to serve.”

I do not want to have that kind of power over people’s lives. I expressly do not want to be the one to give the orders that would send people to likely death in combat, or to withhold pardons from those who would be put to death – for whatever reason and however much “deserved”.

Make me President, and you would absolutely see a great devolution of power from that office. And I’d make sure the Congress – and the bureaucracy that supports both branches – lost people and power and influence, too. I probably wouldn’t last more than half my term before being assassinated by someone in government.

But to answer your question: I can find ‘fun’ in anything. I’m sure I could have some fun from time to time as President. But from everything that I’ve read about the people who serve in that office, their time is so carefully ‘scripted’ and scheduled (aside from Clinton’s famous inclination to run on “Clinton time”, which seems disrespectful to everyone else), I couldn’t live like that for long.

No. I think it would be a blast to be a benevolent dictator, but president, president of the United States? No, fun would not be the word I would use to describe it.

Aethelflaed's avatar

@lillycoyote A benevolent dictator where you just hand the reigns over to your right hand woman, and just get all the perks with almost none of the responsibility. And it’s great right up until the people behead you.

Hey world, can you hear me say, Cliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiintoooooooon! Monica! Cliiiiiiiiiiiintoooon! MONICA!!! : )

I’d have me a rotating presidential desk! Yeah, baby yeah! ( flash big yellowish teeth )

Totally agree with you, @FutureMemory ! It seems like there are only extremes when it comes to the popularity of the President. If something good happens for the country (like when we found Osama), the President is loved even if he had no part in it. When something terrible happens (like the stock market), they get blamed no matter what. I’d hate to have a job where every little thing I do is watched and judged.

Not at all. I often wonder what in the world would make anyone want to put himself through all that, whether we should assume right up front that anyone who wants it is out of his mind, and what it takes out of a person who manages to survive it. I’ve thought a number of times that I’m glad I don’t have the job of calming President Obama down at night and helping him relax. Even if he seems cool and unflappable, what he’s carrying is too much for any ordinary mortal.

Being queen wouldn’t be so bad; I think I could have got used to that. But president? No, thanks, I don’t even want to be president of my little local writers’ club.

lillycoyote's avatar

@Aethelflaed I am my right hand woman, and yes, of course, it would be fun right up to the beheading, I get that. I just have to hope that the populace would cut me some slack because of my benevolence.

I think the only way I could enjoy it would be to either commit to being a first termer only, or win a second term. My goal would be to ignore the politics as much as possible and act and speak on national tv as I do with my friends. I would swear, I would say and do crude things, and I would love it. But I would genuinely try to do what I thought would help the most people, which is likely scary to some. But I’d do it anyways. Hell yeah. Make me the Prez.

F is for friends who do stuff together.
U is for yo(u) and me.
N is for anywhere at anytime at all.

take this definition of “fun” from someone who watches spongebob.

Blondesjon's avatar

Only if I were allowed to serve my entire term(s) on ‘shrooms.

power is draining and douchey after a while. ‘shrooms are always fun.

ucme's avatar

If I could paint & therefore rename the white house, The Pink Loveshack!!
Then yeah, hahahahaha….I laugh in the face of potential assassination attempts & shit!

OpryLeigh's avatar

No way. I think it would be horrible.

SavoirFaire's avatar

As a follow up, I do think it would be fun if @josie were president—especially if he didn’t care about getting reelected.

no.. hell no..
