Would you know how or have you ever milked a cow?

Asked by Adirondackwannabe (36713points) August 19th, 2011

Someone answered the 10 minutes to do anything question with milk a cow. It’s been 18 months since this was last asked, so I was curious how many jellies have farm roots and could milk a cow. As always humor appreciated, so if you have any farm jokes feel free to throw them in.

I haven’t done it or seen it live, but I’ve seen it on TV lol. What do I do? Just start tuggin’?

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Blackberry That’ll get you a swift kick.lol You don’t move your hands but you squeeze your fingers in order from first to last to squeeze the milk out and be gentle.

wilma's avatar

Are you talking about by hand or with a milking machine?
I assume by hand, I have watched but not actually done the deed myself.
I think I would probably catch on to the technique pretty quick, since I do know a bit about lactation, and how to manually express a woman’s milk.
Be gentle, always.

Yes. I have many times. It is not as easy as it looks though. What ever you do…DON’T PULL! Bessy won’t like it and let you know! lol!

Your_Majesty's avatar

You only need to push a button. In today’s modernized world you can use automatic milker to milk a cow. Although it would be a bit painful.

I can milk a goat. I’m assuming it’s the same technique?

King_Pariah's avatar

If my ex counts (she swelled up after the break up), then yeah, I know how to milk one.

linguaphile's avatar

I have milked cows before and seen them attached to machines. All I remember is a weird texture on the udder and how rubbery it was.
You milk by first pushing firmly upward with the space behind your thumb, then gently squeezing downward.

I milked a cow once many years ago. I believe I could do it again, if required.

I have no idea, desire or intention. Never trust anything with a square arse!!

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

No,but I do have a talent for opening the refridgerator .

I’ve never milked a cow but I have milked a dairy goat. Goats are easy, especially when they are in their little milking stockade. lol

I have tube fed a goose and stuffed pills down a gooses throat too. THAT is quite the undertaking. Kneel over gooses back, squeeze it between your legs, pry it’s beak open and push the pill as far down as you can. If anyone needs lessons on medicating geese I’m your girl. lol

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Your_Majesty It shouldn’t be painful if the machine is functioning correctly.
@Coloma I should try getting pills down a cow. They don’t appreciate it much either.

First step: Make sure it is a cow and not a bull before you start pulling on the dangly things.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Blueroses Good point. Bulls are viscious enough without anyone pulling on their dangly things.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

Yes, I have. I lived on a farm in Russia.

ucme's avatar

Pull the udder one, it’s got bells on!

Blueroses's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe Not to mention, bull-milk is nasty on Cheerios

My Aunt used to have a herd of milking cows and she taught me how to milk a cow. I loved those animals.

I have never done it, but I’ve always wanted to try. When I was in kindergarden, they brought a cow to our school and our teacher got to milk her. Ever since that day, I’ve always wanted to try it. I also read all of the James Herriott All Creatures Great and Small Books so I have a love and fascination with cows and goats and farm animals in general.

I think I’m going to add milking a cow on my bucket list, along with cheesemaking : )

Michael_Huntington's avatar

I’ve been practicing every day now for the last 7 years or so.

syz's avatar

Yes, and yes. As well as goats. And dogs. (Not for milk collection, as a treatment for mastitis.) I’ve also collected colostrum from a (sleeping) tiger.

Your_Majesty's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe I believe it may be a bit more painful comparing to soft-hand milking style. Prolonged and over-use may also cause mastitis. But overall, it’s a fast and more efficient method to extract milk.

When I was a kid, most public schools would have a van come by with a cow and a speaker who would also demonstrate milking and ask for volunteers to try it out. I just assumed all schools had “cow milking day”.

crisw's avatar

I’ve milked many a goat (and made lots of cheese and yogurt and goat milk soap!) It’s hell on the carpal tunnel syndrome, though. If I ever get back into goats, I might invest in a small milking machine.

FutureMemory's avatar

Milked goats when I was a child. The cat would hang around and wait us to squeeze some milk his way…was humorous.

Vunessuh's avatar

I milked a cow while visiting Australia. I guess I milked an Australian cow.

Coloma's avatar

@Vunessuh

LOL, I milked California goats

Hey, it’s a coffee table book….... ” Milking cows all over the world” haha

Vunessuh's avatar

@Coloma lol, a coffee book or a calendar. March is a milked cow from Ireland, May is a milked cow from Mexico, December is a milked cow from Iceland and so on…. :D

Coloma's avatar

@Vunessuh

LOL..good laugh, I have always wanted to do a calender of my goose ‘Marwyn’, call it “Playgoose.”

Vunessuh's avatar

@Coloma Your geese and my pigs would make a great calendar! ;)

rebbel's avatar

Yeah, this afternoon, for a minute or ten or so.

Kayak8's avatar

Milked cows and goats, slaughtered hogs . . . pretty much can hold my own in that environment.

answerjill's avatar

I did it once—on a Girl Scout field trip, I think.
