Has anyone else noticed a seasonal shift in recent years--about one month early?

Asked by anartist (14808points) August 21st, 2011

Or is it not a recent but a cyclical trend, one relating to another pattern of harsh winters seasons [in reducing scale] followed 2 years later by harsh summers [in reducing scale], finally followed by flat seasons? I have seen both these patterns both now and in earlier years.

Please, only if you KNOW.
I speculate enough.

I don’t know, but, I have noticed these trends as well. This has been an amazingly mild summer, and I JUST looked up the 2011 winter predictions, they say an average winter for the west, no El Nino or La Nina action, neutral.

@Coloma rhis has been a record-breaking hot scorchin’ bitchin’ summer here in DC and most eastern US—broke all records DC May-July for hottest ever recorded, but is letting up in August, usually hottest month. 90s in May [unheard of] and heavy relentless strings of 90s-100s June-July but milder August.

BTW who is “they”?

August is now the wettest month ever in Philly. It’s been humid and hot except when the rain chases away the sun.

But I haven’t seen the seasons coming early. They seem to come right about when they usually have. It’s hard for me to imagine what you’re talking about. Enough so that I feel like I didn’t understand the question.

Do you mean that instead of summer coming in June, it comes in may? And instead of Fall coming in September, it comes in August? ‘Cause that’s crazy talk.

@anartist I was just wondering about the record breaking temps. Is it breaking records for the particular day of the year? Or, hottest temperature ever ever? Do you know?

@wundayatta August isn’t usually the wettest month?

We’ve had a really wet summer, and it wasn’t too hot either. A few hot days, but no prolonged heatwave like in the Eastern U.S. I can actually feel the “cool” edge of autumn in the air already, especially in the evenings, and it’s only near the middle of August. When I was young, August used to be really hot and muggy to the very end, but for the last few years this hasn’t been the case.

@anartist

‘They’, was some longterm meteorlogical forecast, can’t remember the source, it was NOT the Farmers Almanac. lol Google, weather predictions for winter of 2011–12

@JLeslie The previous wettest month was September. On Average, July is the wettest month, with August and September and May being the next wettest months. Interestingly, even though July is the hottest month, on average, August holds the record high.

@wundayatta Interesting. Here in Memphis August is the hottest month traditionally, same with Southest FL. However, I am not aware which month has the hottest days typically. Averages do not always tell the whole story.

@JLeslie No. You need to add variation into the statistics in order to get a better idea of what is going on. If you want to get even more of the story, you add a whole bunch of other stats. Average is the most common and probably the most primitive of statistical tools. However, it is a starting point.

@JLeslie many record breaking hot days in may, June, July. Not August.
Somany talk of rain—was too hot for rain in July-iven when it did it dried up before it hit the ground and the air was still hot.
