How to get into the e-commerce area?

Here in Brazil, managers of e-commerce for great enterprises have one of the highest paying salaries.

What can one do to gain experience to work in the area, besides on the job experience? Is there anything one can learn at home? I understand working with websites require knowledge in html/css, javascript, PHP and such- Is there anything else one can do to prepare to work with e-commerce?
